What is the easiest way for taking the crankcase(bottom of the engine) off???

Hey Guys :)

I am dissassembling my gs500 engine, because I have to change the driveshaft.
I have turned the engine upside down and then I have taken these parts off:
- Left and right side cover.
- Oil pan
- all crankcase bolts

After taken these parts off, the crankcase still wont come off.  :cry:
So my question is, do I have to take more parts off like clutch, starter clutch, primary drive gears, and external shift mechanism?

There's a few people that could tell you exactly what needs to come off from memory....but I'm not one of them. My advice? Check the service manual. It will tell you everything you need to know.

If you mean splitting the cases then you will have to pry them apart with pry bar levers.  Do this only after you are certain that all the bits that bolt up to both sides are removed.

The two halves of the case are adhered to each other with RTV silicone.  When you close the case up you will want to run a bead of silicone around the mating surface otherwise you will have oil leaks.

Doesnt the upper have to come off as well? (head and cyls?) ive been lucky ive not had to dig too deeply into a gs. so this part is a bit foggy)
yet i should know this lol.

Nah, the upper can stay on for splitting the cases (although being flipped upside down, oil will pool around the valve shims). Now if the crankshaft had to come out, the top end would need removed because of the cam chain.

Its bolt #11 that catches people out, its in the space the starter motor sits in and needs to come out from the top side but check the drawing and make sure you haven't missed any others.




And don't even think about sealing it up with RTV silicon. If a piece of that hardens up then breaks off inside and goes for trip around the oilways/gearbox/clutch and gets stuck in the wrong place you will end up in a world of pain

Use a non setting sealing compound, something like Hylomar.
