Probably going to start a debate. . . but I have a question. . .

Greetings to all and sundry!

As you may know from my WIP on my bike, I'm a bit crazy, and thus can't leave the bike alone, even when I just need to get it running first and then mod it. . . :cookoo:
But since I'm a hopeless dreamer, I recently came up with an idea to mount up the fairing of a GSX600R onto the bike.
A concept of my lunacy:

Now, I have a question about feasibility.

The GSXR's width specs are as follows:
GSX-R 750 2002
Overall Width: 715 mm (28.1 in)

However the GS500E's width is 745 mm (29.3 in)

Could it even be done?

I like the idea, and I love the idea of having a 100% unique GS, but am I dreaming too big?

Could the brackets for the GSXR be modified to be wider without over-stressing the plastics?

Thoughts? Opinions? Harsh criticisms?

Back when the GS500 was commonly raced lots of guys mounted up full fairings from various sport bikes. You just have to be clever in fabbing brackets. Nothing is going to be close to bolt on. Race fairings are easier though, since you don't have to worry about lights.
If you can find some badly rashed/broken fairings for very cheap it would be good to do a test fit with them to see how everything lines up, and if the project is doable.

I will do that! I hadn't thought about getting some rashed/broken fairings for testing. . . it makes sense! :thumb:

Listen to Rich (Desmond.....not me) - he's a smart guy.

I don't think you would have any real problems putting a fairing from an Inline 4 on the GS though. That overall width thing? That can be deceiving since it isn't the width of the engine at the crank or cylinder head. What's the widest point on the GS? I'd say the handlebars, which would be narrower on a GSXR.

Once you have a better idea of what you might go with, you can give the folks at Airtech a call. When I put a 3/4 GSXR fairing on my GR, they were able to give me the approximate width of the bottom so I had an idea of how much space I would have (which turned out to be plenty).

And lastly, let me say that adding a fairing to a bike it isn't designed for is a LOT of work. From all the fairing mounts, to the headlight mounts, checking clearance for the clip ons, to future maintenance  (you'll need to check / add oil at least), etc.. It all adds up. Not trying to talk you out of it, just don't want you to think it's a weekend job or anything.

I know it won't be easy or quick, plus I may have to make cuts on the fairings for the side-cases. I have a motorcycle mechanic friend who is helping me noodle the idea out. . . :thumb:
As for AirTech, I thought about getting their Titan kit, but I really wanted a more modern upper fairing. . .

That's an amazing build! I saw some elements they used that I'll definitely have to scrutinize more closely!
Cheers for the input!

the only thing I didn't like about those fairings was the massive gap at the from of the frame. Just out of curiosity, when adding fairings do you then need to install a cooling system?

Another question: the lower bracket they show in the video; is that an OEM bracket, or does anyone think its custom?
