I'm searching these forums, internet, Haynes manual and can't find this. Where is the ground connection from the battery's -ve terminal to the chassis/engine? 2006 GS500F

There is a ground strap the goes from the negative terminal to the back of the engine.  There is are two threaded holes, one on each cylinder.  I believe the stock location is on the right cylinder.  I shortened mine and stuck mine on the left cylinder.

I do not believe there is a separate chassis ground.

Interesting, I have the tank off and don't see anything connected to the back of the engine except the intakes for the carbs. There are two allen bolts, one on each side, but nothing connected.

Why not follow the wire from the battery? It is possible that somebody relocated the ground wire (not really likely, but definitely possible).

Not sure about the GS500, but my old GS450 and current GR650 the ground wire was attached to one of the bolts at the very rear of the engine, along the bottom, and on the right hand side.

Actually trace down the wire from the battery?!    That's genius level clarity of thinking right there! :thumb:

Sorry for the dumb question. I didn't have luck tracing the wiring before posting, thought it might be hidden somewhere out of sight.

There are no real dumb questions when it's about learning what's what!...

But the mk1 eyeball is very successful in finding where things go!

(Except when I'm looking for stuff in the pantry apparently! )

Have a bit of a look and trace the.wires and stuff with your finger....

Also a workshop manual a multimeter (plus some practice with both) is a good idea..... lets you identify items and also describe whatever things you need to ask about... easier! :thumb:

Yeah, don't feel bad Smoke. Janxy wasn't ribbing ya.

If you're questioning the integrity of the ground cable, you'll need to find where it is and how iit's routed on your own bike. Like I said before, we (or at least everybody that has a 500) can tell you where the ground strap should be, but it doesn't guarantee that yours is set up the same.

I'm bowing out, browsing over the forum there is/are multiple threads on this bike with overlapping issues and questions... based on other info I'm sure this one can be resolved easily enough without anything I'm thinking of.

No worries, thank you both. I think I traced it to somewhere on the back of the crankcase but light doesn't seem to escape from that place. I'll probably be wiring up an emergency backup tomorrow.

I've read a novel's worth of each of your posts over the past two weeks, so beer's on me if I ever happen to slide into you on the road.

I couldn't find mine either but I know I need to look further in now.  I followed the wire as far as I could.  Guess the tank comes off tomorrow.  My problem is the batter end is coming apart, not enough wire left to put a new connector on so I'm going to run a new wire all the way and try to do it right.

You can find a wiring diagram somewhere on here, but it's unfortunately not as easy as replacing with a simple ground strap since a couple of ground connections are hardwired back to the terminal (at least the rear lights iirc). Might be easier to splice in an extension leading to the terminal.

Smokestack,

I just unbuttoned the fuel tank and intake filter.  I followed the wire down.  You can see the bolt and wire if you lay on your right side, on the right side of the bike and look on the back bottom of the engine, there is a tube blocking part of it.  Not sure what that tube is mine was not hooked to anything, it may be the tube that goes to the bottom of the tank?  You'll need a 10mm socket, 1/4 swivel, long Extension and rachet wrench.  I don't see any other wires coming off the ground except one small black and white near the battery terminal.

Thanks.

The tubes are the tank vent and overflow. The vent hose plugs into a canister on mine but I don't think it plugs into anything on non-California models. The drain hose is routed back away from the engine and doesn't connect to anything.
