Carbs, again.... And site issues, maybe???

SO I have a few questions here (I originally posted them in my first post).

1. What issues would a vacuum leak in the nipple caps on top of the carb covers cause? Before I took the carbs off the bike would only idle at full choke. When I gave it some throttle it would bog down for a second, rev high, and take several seconds to return to idle speed. Since I have had the carbs off I looked over them and everything looks clean as a whistle, almost like they were recently cleaned. All the jets look good. Is there anything else I should look at before re assembling to see if the fixed vacuum leak has solved any issues? This is the first set of carbs I have dealt with that has the nipple cap thingy.

2. Is it just me, or are a lot of the pics on this site broken? A few of the sticky threads I tried to read have broken pics. In particular the one about carbs and their various parts. Which pretty much makes that sticky useless for a newbie. Could just be this crappy compouter though.

There are a lot of broken pic links on the website. Through the years, hosting iterations, and users who don't participate any longer, there are many pictures that have been lost over time.

There are lots of pics and text information on the site that still make this forum viable as a resource. At least as much as any other internet forum.

I will be adding additional pics that I took while I had my 2007 carbs open. I host all my pics in a specific directory of my photobucket account, so unless photobucket has issues or changes their url pointers, my pics will always be visible.

Leaking caps cause engines to run badly.  Causing one or both of the carbs to be choked.

Clogged jets and leaking intake boots can cause symptoms similar to yours.  Use metal guitar sting to poke out the orifice of the jets.  Inspect the intake boots for any cracking or separation from the metal base.

While the carbs are off check that the fuel needle valve operates smoothly, the base of the valve us is seated in the carb all the way.  Check that the needle tip is not worn.  Should be a little cone like a tiny little sharpened pencil.

Thanks for the replys guys! I agree this site is invaluable. Since this I have not been here long, and have not tried, can we not post pics to the forum itself to prevent broken pics? Perhaps that would incur too much extra webhosting costs, or perhaps I am just wrong alltogether.

Lucas: All of the jets were clear of obstructions looking through them was perfectly round dots of light. Needles may be a bit worn though, I took a quick look at them they were pointed, but not draw blood from a finger prick sharp. The vacuum routing was a mess, and I think that may be my biggest issue. One nipple cap had a broken nipple, cracked hoses on the other nipple.

OH! I almost forgot to ask!! The fuel tank petcock... If I were kneeling down by the gear shift, and lift the tank, I should be able to see the On/Off from there right? When I took the tank off I had to hold the tank sideways and get at it from the right side. Also, the fuel hose looks odd. Like foam or something.

I plan to change all the vacuum and fuel lines and see what I have then. I believe the fuel line is 1/4" anyone know right off what size vacuum hose? I will hit the part store on the way home today.

The amount of space and bandwidth that would be needed to host pics here too would necessitate either allowing ads to generate site revenue or many more donations than the admin currently receives. I don't know about the rest of you, but I appreciate that this site is ad-free.

Hosting yourself with photobucket, imgur, etc., is really no issue. It's when people hosted on their personal/school server and then scrapped it, or removed the pics that we usually can no longer view them.

Yeah that is what I had figured. It is nice to have a site that doesn't blast you in the face with ads, or even worse, auto play videos.

The valve on the tank is accessible from the right side. Awkward,I know.

I recommend 1/4 inch Tygon fuel lines.  I've had them on for a year and taken them off and on countless times.  All without any hose clamps.  I do not know if other brands will fit if you get the same size, Tygon is stretchy.

If you want ordinary fuel lines this other thread has a picture of the various hoses with sizes

Edit:  While you have the carbs off, what size jets do you have installed?  And how many washers (If any) are on the slide needle?

Or you can replace with stock and not have to worry about the fact that most of the fuel hoses connect to different diameter connections on each end. Plus, the stock OEM hoses have all the proper bends in them already and are already the correct length. No muss, no fuss, no hassle. More expensive, but worth the reduced hassle in my mind.

I would like to assume the jets are stock, but I cannot be sure that the PO has not replaced them. I should check them for markings, where would I look?

The size of the jets should be stamped or etched into the side.  Different manufactures of jets have their own way of marking them.  There isn't too much surface area, so the marks don't really have much room to hide from you.

Flameeater

I took a look at them yesterday. The writing is really hard to see but they appear to be the same size as stock jets. I am hoping the vacuum leak will solve the issue. I have the carbs back on the bike, now I just need to find a way to feed them without the tank on. I used to have an old tank from a push mower, dunno where it went though.

The line that runs from a T between the carbs, long thick one, above the fuel inlet. Does that attach to anything? I believe it was hanging free when I took the bike apart.

ALSO FYI the pic issue I was speaking of, yeah... it's this crappy computer, not the site.

I don't think so. AFAIK it's a vent/overflow line. Mine just hangs open toward the bottom of the bike.

gsJack

Top T is vent hose that opens behind air box.  High speed running problems can be caused if it's not placed out of the wind.
