Carb FLOATS!!!!!

I know this subject has been gone over a million times here but I am having one hell of a time trying to lower my float height.

They were low after I cleaned the carbs and put them back on the bike so I took them off and adjusted them.  Ended up getting the right carb perfect but the left one was still high 4mm.  Now I have tried bending that tab every which way and the float ends up being either high or way too high!

I also took the bowl off the right carb just to compare the two and see if there was some difference in the way the valve seat was sitting or just to get some kind of clue as to what was going on and now that float level is high and it won't adjust down!

I am using the K&L float needle and valve seat but I don't understand how they were low and then I had one carb adjusted perfectly until I took the bowl off and now they're both too high?

I am stumped here, I've had them carbs apart over 20 times and cannot seem to figure it out.  Will the gas level being 4mm too high in the bowls make a big difference in how the bike runs?  Any help will be GREATLY appreciated, thanks!

Oh, it will make a difference..... if it runs at all, it will start drooling gas.

How are you measuring float height? Many people recommendthe clear tube method (myself included), but the manual tells you how to set it properly - measuring from the float to the gasket surface. If you do it per the manual and it is STILL way off, iI'dsuspect the problem is something else..... bowl gasket catching the float, bad needle / seat, etc... iI've never used a K&L needle / seat, but iI'd research their reviews if I were you.

I know others in here have said that they had problems with the K&L floats throwing off their float height and ended up replacing with OEM, especially with pre-'04 carbs.
It seems it has become necessary to qualify my posts:

I have been using the clear tube method also.  I make adjustments and then put them back together, fill em up and check with the tube.  I tried adjusting them per the manual by measuring top of the float to the gasket surface and they are still a few mm high.

Guess I will have to buy some OEM needles.  The needles that were in the carbs when I got the bike are smoked.

I learned my lesson, I wont be buying K&L anymore.   :embarassed:
