But yeah. Being in gear is what stops me. Should I start another thread?

Couldn't hurt.  New topic title will draw more focused attention.

I think you have a couple of issues:

First of all, I think you have a vacuum leak or the bike is just running lean, which is causing the hanging idle.

Secondly, you're burning a lot of oil. rings?

Now, the clutch thing. I actually think it could be electrical. Maybe the clutch being in is a red herring. Does it do this when the clutch is out? Like, let's say you carefully ran it in gear with the clutch out on the side stand and see if it will rev (and turn the rear wheel) or if it sputters ... just to rule out whether it's the clutch or clutch switch.

Anyway, maybe test that, and if it turns out that it works ok when not in neutral and the clutch is out, then I'd look into the side stand switch, side stand relay, clutch switch, neutral switch, etc. make sure they are all working and not making poor contact, intermittent, high resistance, etc.

I've been studying the wiring diagram lately because my wiring is a complete mess and the PO hotwired a bunch of stuff (side stand switch, clutch switch, etc.).  So I have wiring on the brain.
