I've hurt mine.

My bike did run perfectly but my left intake pipe was in a bad shape and would sometimes cause the carburetors to kind of hop or bounce out, so I went to my usual shop with a brand new one to make them change it (I don't have a personal garage, utterly frustrating). So we changed it and now I have some issues when idling and when holding a speed between 4,000 and 5,000 rpm.

I might know the reason for the idling part, I told him while we were talking that I did plan to change my handlebar switches in the next few months for something more recent and I'll probably lose the choke lever, buy an aftermarket one that I would place somewhere around the engine. He had an idea of not using a lever at all and do it by hand since the left part of the choke isn't difficult to reach even with gloves. So he tested something and displaced the breather and it might be in contact with the choke. The breather was not the reason. I stopped writing the message and went check that out on the bike, I moved the breather away and I still have a bad response from the choke lever, I now think the cable might be stuck in some way (cf the wiki : "Ensure all control cables are free and have not siezed, on the GS500 the choke cable is prone to this."). I lost my job Friday so I'll be able to check that better on Monday.

The idling issue is still there. I can't pull it as far as I used to before, it doesn't come back to the point Zero (I need to manually push the part 28 on this page http://www.suzukipartshouse.com/oemparts/a/suz/50d3f431f8700230d8b4c33e/carburetor). It also act weirdly, when I pull it, the idling actually goes down for a couple of seconds and then the rpm goes up.

About the second part, the back and forth noise when holding a speed between 4,000 and 5,000 rpm. It might just need either a carb sync... I hope.

I'm still waiting to receive the switch to install hazard lights on the bike. I bought a cheap one from China last week, I should receive it in a week or so. I don't have much room on my handlebars so I'm not sure where I'm going to put the switch yet. But I've prepared the schematics, I haven't touch anything electrical since middle school so that will be a good way to re-learn everything.

Took the carbs, cleaned them, and started tuning.

Finally got around to doing the diode mod. After almost a year of having my GS, I finally have working turn signals. While I had the fairings off, I gave it a pretty good cleaning. I had a ride planned for today, but we rescheduled for tomorrow for a little warmer weather.

Took about a 120 mile ride this afternoon. Nearly perfect weather. Unfortunately I lowsided around a 90+ degree left hand turn that I mishandled. Bent the clutch lever a little bit. I was able to bend it back enough to ride home, but it still needs some work. Also dented the tank (with my foot, somehow), but not terribly. I also broke one of the newly wired turn signals. Thankfully, I don't think I hit pavement except with the left bar end. My jacket has a small rip on the left sleeve, but otherwise I'm intact.

Glad to hear you're not damaged. Everything else sounds like 'appropriate battle scars'. My bike has few scars that it wears with pride.

Thanks. Glad to have made it through unscathed. Bummed about the damage, but certainly glad it wasn't worse, as it easily could've been.

Thank you! It was a pretty low speed incident, but I'm more sore this morning than I expected. I'm really grateful that the ground was wet enough to soften my impact haha. My helmet had some mud on it, but no scrapes or other damage.

You're right about the tank! I had no idea it would dent like that. I went down on my left side, but the right side and top of the tank are what is dented. I've deduced that it has to have been my foot that did the damage, because there's green and white scuffs on the tank, and the only thing I could find that are those same colors is the shoes I was wearing.

Do you think you can pull 'em out at all?

I'm not sure...I'll post pics later and get some thoughts before I even consider trying it. My parents' neighbor is an auto body guy, so next time I see him I might ask if he'll do it for me. He's a nice guy, and I grew up with his oldest son, so he might be willing to give me a hand. The top isn't so much "dented" as it is just pushed down. Not really sure how to explain it other than to say if you're looking straight across the top of it, the top of the tank is not level. I'm not sure if there's much I can do with that, but it's only really noticeable while sitting on the bike and looking down at the tank. The dent on the right side of the tank is a pretty noticeable one. If I could pop that one out, I'd be thrilled.

My original tank had that "pressed in" top problem and I pulled it out (mostly). As long as it's not creased you can do it. PM me if you want a walk thru. Basically the idea is to whip up a prying mechanism using something like an aluminum baseball bat to pry upwards on the tank by using one of the four bolt holes from the fuel cap as a pull point while the bike is on a center stand.

As for the pop-out dent, using one of those hot-glue dent pullers may work shockingly well if you give it a chance. Probably require a dozen or more attempts to fully pull it out. Put the hot-glue doodad right in the middle of the deepest part of the dent and pull it out carefully according to the instructions. I got a set from Harbor Freight for next to nothing. Worked wonders on my old tank.

Of course after doing all of this on my old tank, I still replaced it.

Cool, thanks man. I snapped a couple pics, I'm going to make another thread about it...

I like harbor freight for stuff like that which (I hope) I only need for one-time or very occasional use.

First, the GS500 got some new stablemates delivered. In the back is a 2005 GSX-R 600 race bike, on the left is a 2003 Gas Gas TXT Pro 280, and in front is a 1979 Yamaha IT250.

Then I installed a new headlight on the GS500; it's a JW Speaker 8790 Adaptive unit.

Lastly, I ordered a flyscreen from Dart for the GS500, just to see if I like it better than the naked look I've had since 2010.

RideShield

Went for a ride in Nockamixon State Park and took a picture by the Lake's spillway.

The bike is running okay so anything I have to do to it can wait.
