I'm very interested in that tach/ speedo you got. or rather the bracket that's holiding it.

bike is looking great so far man! don't you just love it when you get a free GS? =D

Made that bracket myself, used two flat metal brackets I got from home Depot. Those holes were already in them but I like them. Just cut them with a dremel and bent them where I wanted them. Made a similar bracket for my headlight which went on tonight (pics to come tomorrow once it's wired up!)

Having a great time with this bike so far, hopefully I can settle on tire sizes for the Shinko 700's and get them ordered soon

So not sure how I feel about it, but I had this led bar laying around so I made a bracket for it and wired it up with a low and a high beam. Looking for yays or nays from the crowd, but I think it will look pretty cool with the Shinko's on there once it gets the offroad look going

just checking out this message board for the second time i think and I find this! this build is great! exactly what I'd like to get to eventually...I currently have shinko 705s (130/80/17) on the back and front of my gs500, and i really like the fat front tire.  The 700s look great though. I'm having trouble deciding what I think about the light bar, though...probably need to see it with the tires....or maybe a high fender....

Yeah the light bar might end up being temporary, but I am modifying the stock fender and raising it up so it may look cool with that and the tires.
No problems mounting that tire on the stock front wheel?

So the moment of truth. Did all my research and found both front and rear shinko 700's in a tubeless 5.10x17 which I understand for all intents and purposes is 130/80/17. Does everyone think this will fit on my front wheel before I buy it? I know the rear should be fine

I didn't mount it, but it runs great, albeit, I never rode the gs500 with stock wheels, so I can't say how much worse it handles...

Pretty bike! Adding fork gaiters to my list

Viernes, you have those mounted  on the stock wheels right? The tires I want should fit if that's the case

Viernes

yes, using stock wheels.

Cleaned and rebuilt the carbs today and installed the new air filter and plugs! Should theoretically run now but I want to really clean out the inside of the tank and clean the tank petcock up as much as I can tomorrow before I try to start it up, saw some nastiness got in there maybe during the painting process. Also ordered my new tires, thanks everyone for helping out with that i was hesitant to click the "buy" button lol. Pretty productive day in all. Cross your fingers for me that she starts tomorrow or the next day if I get her back together! ☺

So im considering bypassing the vacuum petcock and putting in a simpler gravity fed system. Already have the parts for it and a brand new, suitable petcock so the option is on the table. My question is, if I go with that route, do I just plug off the vacuum line from the carb?
Again, still just throwing the idea around, I may just end up really cleaning out the stock petcock and seeing how that works.

If the stock petcock isn't broken, I see no reason to advise you to swap it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, IMO.

But at the end of the day, its your build mate, do whatever makes you happy. Liking your build so far, light bar is pretty cool looking. Can't wait to see the new tires. :thumb:

True, only reason I'm considering it is the PO told me it was having "fuel starvation" issues. I'm inclined to believe any problems it had were due to its carbs being the worst I had ever seen, lol.

This is my first vacuum petcocked bike though, my old shadow had just a simple on/off switch. So with the stock petcock, when I'm not riding the bike, do I just leave it in the on position? Is there no real shutoff on these?

You're probably right about the carbs being the source of the issues the bike was having.

As for the stock frame petcock, the part I bolded is correct. The "ON" and "RES" positions on the frame petcock are designed such that fuel will not continue to flow when the bike is not running. Fuel is only pulled from the tank when vacuum is generated by the engine cranking. The PRI position bypasses this and allows fuel to flow even when no vacuum is present. This is useful if the bike has sat for a little while and you need to refill the carb bowls before attempting to start the bike.

If you want to turn it "off" for some reason, there is a tank petcock you can turn off. This is normally used when you need to remove the tank for service.

GSjon

Sounds good. I'll probably just give the stock petcock a good once over and replace the fuel lines.

Suzi Q

If you do end up removing the vacuum petcock, any auto parts store will have vacuum caps to plug the carb.
Deals on Amsoil if you want it. PM me for details.

GSjon

So all back together and it turned over for the first time in 3 years. Woo-hoo, except that there's whitish smoke coming from the exhaust port area in front of the engine... like alot of it.
Any guesses?
New plugs, oil, fuel lines, jets and internal carb parts.

I did remove the speedo and tach cables when I converted to digital, and the tach cables port is in that general area. It's currently still uncovered, not sure if that could be an issue?
