Only ran it for a couple one minute-ish spurts. Don't want to keep trying until I get some insight in case it's something serious

General consensus is that there was water in the crankcase from sitting so long, and/or the new paint on my headers is baking a bit causing some smoke. Gonna attempt to run it up to operating temperature then let it idle for awhile till it stops the smoking, then do another oil change. Also replacing the exhaust gaskets

Didn't you just do a fresh oil change? Water in the crankcase wouldn't really cause smoke, but header paint definitely would until it's cooked off. Check the oil to make sure it's not grey in color, then go ahead with warming up as you described. If it's header paint, it should cook off within 20 mins. Make sure space is ventilated.
Deals on Amsoil if you want it. PM me for details.

GSjon

Solved. It was the header paint. It was just starting to smoke at the exhaust gasket area because that was heating up first. Let it bake off and we're all good.

Back to the little things, can anyone recommend a good high heat adhesive for me to put the new suzuki covers back on the case?

So if I were to put this filter on, what do I do with the breather hose coming from the top of the engine?  Just put on one of those mini hose clamp filters like this?

Yep!

New shoes came in today! Never mounted tires but I think I can get it done myself. The new chain and front sprocket are happening at the same time, so it'll be an entirely different animal when all is said and done!

If you want to use the stock airbox but want more flow ( a fair bit actually) there is a Suzuki shape washable air filter available aftermarket for the Suzuki gsx1400 that bolts straight in but has way more cross-sectional area.
The fuel delivery is a huge pain , especially if you are modding the bike BUT you really do need a shutoff valve of some sort ( vacuum or electric) as Suzuki is notorious for speccing float valve that leak and fill your crankcase with fuel. Not just the GS500, but I know from experience, the DRZ400SM as well. I have bought an aftermarket vacuum operated fuel tank mounted one and will rig a cable to allow priming lever to be actuated if necessary. Or maybe a vacuum bypass so I can suck the vacuum side open on the rare occasions it is necessary?
Like the look and the direction you are taking considering your riding environment .

Suzi Q

Nay on that headlight.

Yay on the rest of the build. Very cool man!

Help! Lol so I'm pretty sure my hanging rpm problem was due to a vacuum leak from the vacuum line on my petcock being connected to the wrong port on my carbs. Looking at it with the tank on, I see two vacuum ports. One on the right side of each carb, pointing up at a 45 degree angle to the right. I had it hooked up to the one on the upper right of the right carb. (from the rider's perspective, sitting on the bike). Is this the right port?

I've seen diagrams of all the lines from the petcock, and maybe I've just been looking at too many diagrams during this project and my brain is fried, but I still can't fully picture it and trust if I have it right. I've heard some members refer to the vacuum line going to the "left" carb, but no one seems to clarify whether it's the left as the rider sitting on the bike, or left standing in front of the bike looking at it. 😑

Btw, the tires and new exhaust are on! Not riding it until I can be sure that vacuum issue is solved though so I haven't heard what she sounds like 😣

GSjon, what seat are you using? It looks like some that I've seen on ebay, but the width on yours looks like it fits better than the advertised width I saw on the ebay seats...

Thanks!

It's a cheap ebay one. The quality is much better than I expected. You will have to make your own brackets, but if you're already chopping up the frame that kind of thing is to be expected haha.

Hopefully I can get a clear definitive answer as to where the vacuum line goes on the carb so I can test her out with the new tires and exhaust. About ready to delete the vacuum petcock, but im holding onto hope since I cleaned it all out and I like not having to switch a petcock off every time I get off the bike

GSjon, when I get home tonight I will look and take some pictures of the vacuum lines. I pulled my carbs off, but I tried to keep track of where everything went and put it back together once it was off the bike.

Is there any way you can post pics of the seat? Just the underside. I am wondering how you set up the brackets. Really like the way it looks. Why didn't you put a loop?

Appreciate it! I'm the same way, but I got the bike in pieces so I never actually saw it together 😑. Alot of best guesses looking at diagrams, but im still pleased with it being my first carburated project and me actually getting it up and running after a few year sit.

No problem, next time it's off I'll take a few pics. I skipped the loop since the frame comes out to the end of the seat already and by mounting a straight bracket across its more than stable enough. It is still a budget project so I cut costs wherever I can, still under $600 with everything I've done to this point, (thank you ebay and cheap Chinese parts)
