I was looking at GSjons build... so I figured I'd share mine, too. I got a free 1989 GS 3 days ago and I didn't even need to help anyone move. The previous owner was a friend of a friend with a baby and no free time. I got the title and keys with the bike, but the engine is reportedly seized. Luckily it came with a spare engine that is supposedly good, so we will see.

GSjon and I have the exact same taste in a number of areas, but I hope mine will have a unique feature or two or approach at least.

Day two. I went looking on Craigslist for some parts that I knew I'd need and found a 1999 parts bike with just the engine missing for $200. There was no title, but it did come with keys, so it is truly for parts only even though it is nicer than my 1989. I'll probably swap most of the 99 stuff to the 89 frame.

Tonight I got all of the wiring pulled off and labeled. I'm going to clean up the frame and chop off whatever brackets I won't be using and then either paint or powdercoat it before reassembly. I'll probably bench test the replacement engine soon as well.

This is my first motorcycle project of this nature, so let me know if I am doing anything stupid. Also, excuse my messy shop... I'll clean up soon!

Please tell me you're not hacking up that Gel seat.
I'll gladly trade you the fat more aerodynamic original seat - with the same base pan and even cover shipping.
Cool.

No plans to ruin that perfectly good seat... I ordered another seat like Gsjon's and I was planning to ebay this one to recoup the cost of the new seat.

When I settle on everything and finish my build I plan to sell off all the extra parts. I'll keep folks posted here.
