Possible to use older model ignition pick up and rotor on a new model?

Hi guys,

I made another post about the recent collision I had where my ignition pickup and right side engine cover where consequently broken. After searching religiously through e-bay and other websites I could not find a single ignition pickup and rotor for a 2004+ model. First time I've ever had this problem and it's quite frustrating as the collision was quite minor but has caused a huge deal of hassle.

I really need the bike running soon and was wondering if it was possible to use the older model pickup along with the old style ignition rotor? I'm not too knowledgeable on the area and would appreciate someone filling me in. I have located a couple of older pickup units along with the rotor however and will just use those if it can indeed be done.

There may be an aftermarket replacement, that I do not know of. just see what someone else has to say.

I don't believe you can. The 89-00 is a twin pickup ignition. The post 01 is a single.
Who knows maybe the other one can be left unwired - either cut that wire or something - dunno.
If you have the 89-00 experiment and post back.

Thanks.
Srinath.

Have you tried Pathfinder?

The problem you are going to have is that no one will want to take the parts off an engine that can be sold complete as a runner.

Darn!!! Really sorry to hear about your luck (or lack of)

Motosport has it for a lil less than BB at $129.15 but still...

So I've managed to get ahold of a 99 twin pick up plate for the ignition and have bent  the rotor from the collision back into shape hoping it will still function as the teeth themselves are not damaged at all and since it is sensor based, should not make a difference if its a little off shape. :technical: What I'm going to try and do is cut off one of the twin units on the old style plate and as you said make it null. I saw the the unit numbers are the exact same from the twin as with the single broken one in my RHS cover so I'm hoping I've somehow managed to salvage an ignition pick up unit and saved myself 200 pounds if successful.

Will update once my new gasket arrives

No reason to remove one of the pickups. Deal with it at the connector. Just be sure the wire coming from the pickup you want to use is going to the connector correctly so it triggers at the right time... it may be 180 degrees off otherwise.

How the rotor is shaped is important, it affects ignition timing. But probably not super critical.

Don't those '01+ bikes have an ignition advancer? How does that work with the '89-00 signal generator?

It's a super simple circuit and you should be able to make it work as long as it physically fits and at least one of the pickup coils is in the correct radial orientation with respect to the rotor. You might have to adjust some wiring at the connector or splice on the old (newer style) connector if they are different.

The used signal generators are getting much more rare and expensive even for the '89-00 style.
