Hey everyone, so I got everything togeather am waiting on my compressing tool to come in, tried to just see if she would fire up but no luck , I'm thinking I need to fiddle with the carb a lil bit probably new jets since the old ones are 10 years old but was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what else I should consider while I'm at it, I do have spark and power I'm thinking it's an air/fuel issue

Suzuki Stevo

If your battery is old, low or on it's way out.....yer starter will take the Lions Share of the voltage, leaving nothing for the coils...No Spark no PoP  :whisper:

Jeysmith

Yeah I have spark and a new battery rn so I'm confident it's not the plugs

Suzuki Stevo

Oops, sorry....missed that you had spark

Old fuel doesn't like to burn....a few months of untreated fuel is all it takes.

It's new fuel, old hoses so maybe need new hoses but ok the carb off and it had fuel inside

qcbaker

Spray starting fluid into the air filter while attempting to start the bike. If it runs on starting fluid, you know that the problem is related to fuel.

Carbs have sat for 10 years so I'm thinking how they're just really clogged I did a brief cleaning but maybe wasn't thoroug enough, but I didn't try the starter fluid I'll have to give it a shot

Jeysmith

Side question I'm gonna replace the hoses for everything not gonna pay 10$ a hose from partzilla was thinking just going to autozone advance or others and getting hose cut any suggestions on brands to use for the GS and any extra length I should put on vents or gas supplies?

go to a local parts haus, ge4t a gallon can of carb parts cleaner (with basket) completely disassemble carbs removing anything non metal. (plastic, rubber etc and gasketry) and SOAK them for at least 12 if not 24 hours., trust me on this. reassemble, putting everything back where it belongs. ( tbh new gasketry wouldnt hurt on 10yo carbs) the spray is not good enough in this case. i use the spray to remove the stuff the gallon can leaves behind. carbs should be clean enough to eat off of.)

All the gaskets where in mint condition no cracks or any signs of failure (im a plumber gaskets are my bread and butter) also bike only has 4,000 miles and it's a 2000 gs500e so it's like brand new almost but I know its definitely clogged somewhere so I'll dissessamble everything and let it have a bath for a day and hit it with an air compressor gun tip afterwards and see if it will fire up, should I consider replacing my jets with that said?

yamahonkawazuki

usually jets even clogged to hell and back the 24hr dunk should clear it.  or if anything do you know anybody that plays guitar? find a remnant of the smallest string you can get your paws on the tiniest one ;) and use it to kinda push the varnish out. ( easier done after the soak tbh. it kinda softens it.) tbh i usually re use gaskets IF im sure theyre okay. (although gasketry isnt that much if replacement is called for.)  but be absolutely sure all the rubber o rings, the slides and anything non metal does NOT go into the dunk. (i made that mistake one time. it swelled an o ring. had to go back in and replace it. btw in case you didnt know , when you lift the tank, beside the petcock underneath,  theres a fuel cut off screw. keeps the mess to a minimum.

ive also used ultrasonic cleaners before. and yes that works also. ( had 2 of them left over from jewelry fab.) but fwiw (here in tn the dunk @ napa is around $25 iirc., and it can usually clean several sets of carbs. . i.e. use it to do that set, then cap it, set aside til next time. or use it then to clean mower carbs etc for some extra $. use it til it is almost as black as coffee. pretty much worn out @ that point.

Did you try the starting fluid yet?

No I have not yet, I'm only able to work on it on the weekends due to work and other obligations, I'll try it this weekend but I have my carb off so I may just try to soak it tonight , should I let the plastic floats soak too or just lightly clean with carb cleaner soaked rag?

Edit: also I have not confirmed I have compression yet, the tool should be in on Thursday and then I'll have a definitive idea if it's air/fuel or something else

Do not clean anything that isn't metal with carb cleaner, it will degrade rubber and plastic.

Also, I would've verified the problem isn't spark air or fuel related before ordering a compression tester, but that's just me. :dunno_black:

Ok I will clean only metal , and yes I was debating it but a friend and I went 50/50 cause he needs it for the snow mobile he's rebuilding so I threw half on it and get peace of mind knowing my pistons are fine

Also I know I have spark as I took them out and tried to turn the engine over via the ignition and I had a healthy blue spark, I did buy new plugs and they're coming in soon just cause the ones in are 10yrs old and will put them on a shelf somewhere in case my new ones crap out on me

exactly this. Disassemble carbs COMPLETELY. ALL rubber, plastic and non metal parts do not soak them. Kinda ruins things. I usually over do it by soaking 12 to 24 hers, and yes that stuff stinks Lol. I usually use the spray to purge the cleaner from the carb, let it dry in sunlight, then reassemble.
