My timing may be off?

Ok so I set my timing per the book (set bottom left signal generator (it's slightly off set not straight like photo from book)to RT line the #1 Parallel with the engine, find #2 count 18 back and align number 3) and rechecked this 5 times then assemble the cam gears and tighten down, before hand I did take the header off to check the rings and combustion chamber and ensure they where healthy (rings where fine but chamber needed to be cleaned due to gas sitting in chamber over a 10 yr span)
After that got new gaskets and re assembled making sure to use properly torqued lock nuts, then set my timing,  (used towels to keep the cam valley clean and stop anything from falling in)

Now... I may just be daft but I feel like I screwed something up.. mainly because it feels like my carbs are pushing air out rather than sucking air in. Also while turning the engine over trying to test for compression after a few rotates it feels like it gets caught up on something right next to the signal generator marks, a little extra push could free it but I'm hesitant to push it if fear of breaking something

Your ignition was advanced ? That could make a few degrees difference.

By advance you are referring to the signal generator?

gsJack

Did you have the right cylinder at TDC and the notches on the camshaft ends pointing inwards towards each other when aligning arrows 1,2,and 3?

Tdc ? And the photos are from when I assembled it but yes they where pointing toward to each other when I aligned the 1,2,3 marks

Jeysmith

Is it possible my Rt mark is opposite?

gsJack

Finally gave up on Photobucket and started putting images at Imgur.

Nope Rt mark is in the correct orientation
Right piston Top or low end of stroke when timing?

It is on the low end rn which co incides with the RT mark

Just took apart again to make sure and it's still not making compression  :technical:

Also is it normal for the left exhaust cam to not fit down all the way ,(like it has to engage the exhaust cam piston to properly seat)

gsJack

Right piston at top when timing as specified on diagram I linked.  TDC = top dead center.

So the right should be in the highest position closest to the plug and have the Rt mark aligned with my signal generator? I'm not sure it's possible but I guess I'll try and take it apart again

I'm not confident in adding much to this discussion; however, just for clarity - TDC is Top Dead Center. Which refers to the point at which piston 1 reaches most vertical.

I have seen an engine that had timing marks that did not actually match with TDC(not a bike, but a Honda supra), so it's important to not overlook checking this yourself. My father in-law's bike didn't  have any timing marks. That could have been a nightmare had he not takin photos during disassembly.

Rt. Has to be on top mark not bottom.. it's properly timed now ... fml the signal generator just broke

Ouch, were you turning the engine with a wrench on the bolt that holds the rotor?  No good, gotta turn it with the larger hex on the rotor with the rotor properly tightened down.  Hope the locator pin in the end of the crank is OK.

That timing diagram I put together is from two places in a shop manual.  It is correct as shown for engine timing.

Nope pin broke inside. Starter clutch? If I'm correct I'll need a new one or I'll have to drill it out. I was using the 19mm hex nut

Can anyone confirm this is the starter clutch? I need to order the parts  :icon_rolleyes:

No, the starter clutch is on the left side of the bike mounted to the inner side of the alternator rotor.  That is the right side where the ignition signal generator is.

Well I found the signal generator on partzilla but what does that pin go Into, I'm going to probably have to replace it, i f%&ked up
I could've sworn my clutch is inside next to the signal generator,I just don't know what the signal generator connects to via that pin

Thanks everyone for the help tho, it's timed correctly now.. just have a new problem to fix :dunno_black:

The Buddha

Sheeeessssshhhhhhh ... man that went off the rails fast.
I turn the back wheel with it in 6th but you wont be able to see the markings on the rotor/ignition plate from there.

So what's that part inside the clutch housing that the signal generator links up to via the pin? Part of my crank right?

gsJack

Right, end of crankshaft shows in your picture and the pin that broke off was in the crankshaft and locates the signal generator rotor.

Is the Pin part of it or removeable ? Will I have to buy a new crankshaft?
