Hello all I am new to cycling and I am trying to fix my bike. The problem is that it doesn't have a central stand. So now I have to figure out the best way to go, I saw some swingarm stands that seem to do the same thing or should I get a central stand, or probably there's eevn better way. I'd appreciate any thoughts from you seasoned riders :)

Thanks!

well, unless you need it for something, i wouldn't worry about it.  if you do need it, i suggest ebay.  you can probably find a centerstand for cheap.

There are 2 types of rear stands, spooled and swingarm. The spooled stand requires spools to be attached to the swingarm. Holes will need to be drilled to bolt them on. The more stable of the two. The other has angles that the swingarm rests on and no modifications are required. If you want a stock center stand, I have one for $10 + shipping.

Hi guys! Thanks for the replies.

Dgyver,

a am trying to fix my bike as I was unlucky to crash it (spent 2 months riding and twice as much in a cast :) ). And as I am just a poor student I want to be able to do most of the maintenance myself. The least I have to do now is to adjust/change chain. So the question is whether center stand is enough to do that? If so, please let me know if you have paypal or anything so that I can transfer money to you. Also, is there a spring or anything that I need with the central stand to keep it in place while riding? Do you have it? Is there anything else I am missing? I am new to all this, so please bear with me :)

Hope to hear from you soon!

Chain can be adjusted/changed fine on centerstand.  Just be sure to measure chain tension w/ bike on side-stand.

what about other stuff, like oil change and other?

Yep, you can change oil, adjust chain, remove wheel, brakes, shock, carbs/engine, etc.  You can actually use the c-stand in conjunction w/ jackstands/blocks under the frame to prop up the entire bike.

The one thing I can think of that doesn't work well when using the c-stand is doing a rear wheel alignment w/ the string method.  Kinda tricky since it gets in the way.

Other than that, I can't think of anything routine that the c-stand doesn't allow.  A swingarm stand loads the rear suspension... not sure what additional benefit that would have...?

A SA stand is useful if you wanted to race or do track days with the bike and you had to remove both the center and side stands. But I don't think that is an issue in this case.

I have always used a center stand for basic maintenance until my recent bikes did not come with one from the factory and had to use a SA stand. I would usually take off the center stand unless I needed it, dang thing kept scraping the road.

PM sent with the reast of the details.
