Centre stand & exhaust header bolts

The extended foot-leverage part of the centre stand was broken off when I bought the bike, so I bought a cheap one on eBay and got it powder coated with the intention of replacing the bike's broken one.

However, the mounting bolt on the right hand side is blocked by the stock exhaust pipe.

Removing the exhaust is pretty much out of the question, I've attached pictures of my unbelievably crusty headers and mounting bolts that are literally falling apart. I could probably remove it easily as it'd likely fall apart, but that'll be opening a can of worms as I don't want to drill the head to get those rusty bolts out to put it back together afterwards.

I tried removing the exhaust's rear mounting bolt to see if I could push down on it to create any clearance, and almost got there, but it was taking more force than I was willing to give without risking breaking the head (maybe I'm just being overly cautious?).

Do I have any options here?

Try adding "width=400" when you post your images ["img width=400"]["/img"] (can't really see anything when it's so big) :-)

It's an attachment rather than a nested image so don't think I can change the width like that. I'll resize them and get them reuploaded instead though.

Edit:

cbr beat me to it! I've updated the OP now anyway.

I linked this vid in the other thread, he's removing some really rusty exhaust bolts out of a gs500. I think he ended up having success with a drill with a lot of torque.

Looks like the right route to go if I pull the engine, but for the effort it'll take I think I'd rather have no centre stand than go through all that work / cost for a shop to do it.

I've replaced 2 centre stands and 2 side stands, they are really crap and break often.

You don't have to remove the 'zorst, just undo the can bolt by the rear foot rest and lever 'zorst away far enough to get a spanner around the relevant nut on the stand bolt.

Bit fiddly but more than doable. might have to remove a washer or two to get bight if the thread's been stripped. Pack the stand springs with loadsa washers to assist re-installation. Doddle.

I would deffo pay a shop to remove those exhaust bolts and any other ones giving you trouble. The cost for the stress of you doing it will be well worth it. They likely have all the tools and have done it loads of times and get them off easy and it won't be so expensive. Thinking of doing it myself and they aren't half as bad as yours.

Then I'm thinking of rust-proofing the new bolts like this

I'm probably just being too gentle about it then as I didn't want to be properly leaning on it, the risk of cracking the head just gives me shivers!

I agree it's just the cost putting me off. Doesn't look like you can drill straight enough with the engine mounted, so for them to drop the engine and do the drilling will be a good 5hrs labour I reckon? Which at £60/hr adds up to a nice empty wallet!

I remember watching that Delboy's Garage video last year, quite like his stuff but need to take some of it with a pinch of salt (as with everything I guess). Was an interesting video but I've just been replacing my fasteners with stainless ones in most cases. I'd rather risk the increased chance of galling / galvanic corrosion than deal with the fasteners turning into swiss cheese like the current ones have.

Granted I took the head to them without the rest of the engine attached, but a local engineering shop charged me £140 to rehone the bores, drill out and helicoil all 4 exhaust bolts (replaced with studs) and put everything through the parts washer.

Might be easier to just cut the exhaust off at the header, replace the downpipes with ebay 2nd hand ones and have it sorted at smaller expense? once the exhaust is free the stands are easy and you can do them whilst a machine shop does a decent job on the head?

Still pisses me off that Suzuki cheaped out on bolts from new.

Jamming washers or coins in the spring when its extended is profoundly clever too. Discovered that trick on this forum somewhere and it works great.
