Is my engine running too hot?

I noticed after a good 45 minute ride that there is a significant amount of heat coming from the engine. The bike is running nice, starts and idles nicely, and has good power. Before parking after my ride, I licked my finger and touched the cylinder cooling fins and the saliva instantly sizzles like the top of a BBQ. I know this is an air cooled bike and I'm riding in humid weather, but does this sound normal? Has me worried...

Thanks guys!
Andrew.

I'm not expect, but mine does the same. Especially noticeable when riding in the rain. I would say don't worry about it.

Thanks for getting back to me. Yea I wasn't completely concerned seeing that it's an air cooled bike riding in 25 degree weather with 80% humidity. Canada's getting hot right now!

That's hardly hot!

And humidity either has no effect on air-cooled engines cooling efficiency, or might even improve it somewhat since there is better thermal conductivity between the water vapor and the air cooled engine fins. The reason people think more humid feels hotter is because we regulate our temperature by sweating, and more humid air absorbs less of our sweat so we get less evaporative cooling.

Anyway... point is, high humidity and temps in the 25C range (which is about what we cool our indoors to here in TX!) are not anything like extreme for your GS. Lots of GSs running in places where 40C is much more common, no problems. And anecdotally, I can tell you my GS puts out a lot less heat than my Triumph, which is not unexpected since the Triumph is nearly 2x the displacement and power. You'd expect 2x the heat, and that's definitely what it feels like.
