I bought myself a SV650 S

I always look over the ads in the paper for bikes on sale locally in my area. Before buying my GS500 I wanted so much to get a 650SV but the GS was on sale at the time and I had heard it was a great bike to start out on, which it definately is. Yesterday I saw a 2002 SV650S with only 128 miles on it for $3950. It had been sitting in the garage, not used, engine turned over every once in a while and taken around the block. I called the guy asked him why so little use. The now familiar reply, he bought the bike as a co-signer, the girl who did buy it didn't make the payments so he was stuck with the bike. He dosen't ride, was pretty scared of the thing so being the cheeky boy I sometimes am told him I'd pay $3500, it was a deal and the bike is mine :)

As the bike was been sat for a while, I guess all fluids now need to be changed, anything else i need to do?

The better news of all this is I get to have the GS500 around me all the time. My roomie is buying it off me, she loved the GS the first time she saw it, now it's hers. I get to ride it whenever I want. After having the GS as my first bike I really didn't want to let it go, it's always been so much fun to ride. I'm on a winner all round now, I have the bike I originally wanted plus the bike I came to love.

:thumb:  I plan to get an naked SV this fall.  My best friend has the GS (hence why I'm on this site  :P  ) so we'll be able to trade off whenever we feel like a change. :mrgreen:

Just sat 2 years... just oil and gas, and some vaseline on the fork seals and dust covers... The rest should be fine, if something looks dry and its rubber, spray Silicone spray, if its metal, spray wd 40, if its vinyl spray armorall... 2 years is nothing. If you must, bleed brakes, and put in some dot 5.

I get a heavy vibration/shuddering when I am in the low rpms and every time when i start off from 1st gear. Would it be gunk stuck in my jets? what could it be?

try changing the oil to see if the vibration goes away. my best guess would be the oil is old and might have lost some of its properties. other than that you are one lucky bastard and got one helluva deal.
going fast isnt the problem, its the crashing and burning that hurts

It is possible the jets have varnish on them from the old gas. Run some carb cleaner through it. Has there been any mods? I have some jets & desnokled stock airfilter if you need them.
Common sense in not very common.

Can you put carb cleaner in the GS500 just to "clean up the system".  My bike sat for about a year prior to me buying it, I changed the oil, but the motor seems a little sluggish.  I wonder if there wasn't rust in the gas tank?  I'd like to rejet but that's another post waiting to happen about a month or two from now. :thumb:

Yes you can. And the kind you want is Greased Lighting Carb Cleaner. It costs around $8 for a quart but it works miracles. Much cheaper then a carb rebuild if you ask me. I had the same problem on my GS and now its perfect. I haven't read much lately on the SV though. Is it carbuerated (sp) or fuel injected??

Yep, and if you are smart you'll leave it stock.  It runs pretty good in stock form.  Once you install a slip on or a full system you'll need to rejet and fidle with it.

I still have a heavy vibration/knocking when I'm in the low rpms.
So far I have checked tire pressure, changed oil to shell rotella T, used carb cleaner with new fuel, changed the anti-freeze and lubed the chain.
I asked in a thread over at svrider.com http://www.svrider.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=25935 too but I hope the wise ones here can offer me some advice.

dgyver - how easy is it to clean up the jets incase thats the problem? I've done everything myself so far and learning quickly :)

The most effective is to remove the carbs and pull the jets. Soak the jets in carb cleaner. Clean the carbs while you have it apart. Becareful not to get carb cleaner on the floats. I would avoid getting any of the cleaner on the o-rings as well.
