Hey guys,

My GS has developed a strange noise on shut down. Seems like it's coming from the clutch and sounds like a tiny metal ball making one revolution. Bike functions normally and I don't hear any other strange sounds during operation.

Check it out and tell me what you think.

Also, thinking back i'm almost positive this happened after trying to take off from a super steep hill. Stalled strangely and then made that noise, then seemed fine after.

Its the rollers in the sprag clutch on the back of the flywheel springing back and hitting the starter gear as it slows down and stops rotating.

An oil change might help but I wouldnt worry too much about it.

If this is happening, the noise will be from the left side. And if you can heat it, its sending enough vibrations into the rotor to let that disintegrate. It is just a matter of time. So check and see and if it is on the left and fix it. BTW I never have heard of it happening in a GS, it happened on savages and those will blow the starter idler pin out of the case breaking the casting and well, supposedly unfixable, but I have had a good welder weld it back and a ratcheting idler out of a later savage or intruder LC1500 would be a upgraded swap.
Cool.

Haha really, sounds pretty clear on my end. Yes it's the left side.

I've had a few GS500s and learned they make so many noises depending on temp etc.

I thought my 2002 was going to die on a trip down the Blue Ridge mountains at 20k miles...the bike now has 75k and using a 190 shim on left exhaust valve  :dunno_black:
