Hello just joined!  My son (17) bought a benellie 135 got his license and some hours under his belt sold it and found a sweet 2007 GS500F with just a hair over 4k miles on it!  drove nearly 3.5 hrs got it picked up the seller drove it to us to meet up so it was running well.  Got home did a lap around our parking lot at the fairgrounds then put it in he garage because winter decided to come back for a bit.

Now finally a good day hits we go for a quick after work ride af about 25 miles around the county and come home. I look back and hes pushing it up the drive it died!  look into it and the fuse it blown he wasnt doing anything special just cruising home.

Swap the fuse "because sometimes that happens"  a few weeks go by and we want to go for another ride and he makes it to the bottom of the driveway and about 100 yards down the gravel road and pop does it again.

we tried swapping again to no avail as soon as he started riding it blows.

talked with a mechanically inclined friend he said unplug the power regulator and give it a whirl maybe that causing the issue pushing to many volts well we did it with and with out and its not pushing more then 14.04 usually 13.5 is max.  no lights are burnt out we tried turning brights on hitting the brakes etc. everything we could to make it die in the garage and nothing it just runs but as soon as he starts down the road the fuse blows!   Can anyone give me an idea of perhaps a spot that is common to look for a short or something!  I'm really hating the idea of an entire wire harness swap! the kid worked hard to save his money and get a bike he was super excited about this thing and now is just beyond tore up!!

Thanks in advance from deep creek lake MD!!!

If it will only blow at a certain rpm - try revving it in the garage. 07 has an electric tach, if fuse blowing is related to rpm - well I'd start with the tach. Though I have no experience with it and cant exactly visualize how it can happen, maybe the tach has an internal short in it.

Cool.

Its not blowing at a certain RPM we tried that when testing the power regulator. keeping it at 3k seeing if it was pushing over 15 was hoping it was and that was an easy fix but no all the way up it didn't die or short out. could it be different when under load? and actually rolling?  I'm at a loss I've never experienced this with any of my own bikes.

If you take the tank off, you can see the wiring harness, I would thoroughly go through it with a torch/flashlight and a good visual check, disconnect and reconnect all connectors as well.

I am getting away I got pinched somewhere. A good alternative is to to use a 12-volt bulb with crocodile clips (Google it) instead of a fuse, you can then have the bike on and play with the harness and as soon as you see the bulb light Up Bingo , you've found the problem and you haven't burnt out another fuse.

Agree with hereon.
Its gonna take a bit of time and effort to find the short circuit. Could be anywhere!
Does it happen when the bike steers left or right? if so could be a short up front.
To get something you have never had you have to do something you have never done.
