GS500 not performing after messing with the carbs

Hi Guys

I did a little search but couldn't find exactly what I needed so thought I'd put up a post.

I've got a 2007 GS500, I sold it last year and bought back about a month ago. The guy I sold it to pulled the carbs out and changed the float needles. When I bought the bike back it's ticking over fine but it's not performing well at all, in fact it struggles to get up to 30 to 40 to 50mph.

Given the fella changed the float needles I assumed that he hadn't set the float at the right level. I did a bit of research and from what I can see they should be c. 13mm set above the carb casing and measured while on their side. Having done that they sit pretty much dead on 13mm so my next thought is the piping, perhaps he hasn't put everything back where it should be and this in my question. Does anyone have a diagram for the pipe work? I have searched google but can't confirm what I am looking at is for a 2007.

99% its not pipe, unless its blocked.

check the needle is raising and slide is coming up. broken diaphragms also is a possible cause.
Without the filter the slide is visible through the carbs(along with throttle plate).

Cheers for that.

I guess to do that if need run the bike right filter off right?

So I ran the bike and I can see that the slider inside the carb is lifting and the butterfly the other side is opening

Did you check if the float valve is sealing? You could check it with a clear tube in a U shape. Also puffing in the hose or with gas.

If your problem is in the carbs, you have to determine if it is lean or rich.

It's better not to assume anything and check it so your diagnosis leads you in the right track.
If someone changed something but then is selling it, it probably didn't resolve the root problem he had.

If the slides are lifting the diaphragm should be ok. I wouldn't be so sure and I prefer to check them visually, also check the needle is firm in the slide valve.

And if you are removing carbs don't chase your tail and change every oring, clean the jets throughly and check every passage.

Check petcock and be sure you don't have fuel starvation.
