Hi once again!
Fixing a friend's 1996 GS-500E
He bought it al custom modded in to cafe racer, with independent air filters on each carb, stock exhaust (abomination combination?).

Problem was he had overheats and all that, got suggested to change the carbs that he did and got 2nd gen carbs instead. Then he ordered carb rebuild kit from AliExpress (most likely it's 102 mid-main jet which AliExpress kits mostly sell). But oh well all that fit, new intake boots at engine side. All that before bringing it to my attention.

Now,

Bike runs at 1K RPM on enrichener/choke fully engaged and dies the moment throttle is touched. I am yet to open the carbs and check what's inside. Mixture screws were set at 1.5turns which I set at 3 turns out. Pulled out spark plugs and both sides were damp/wet with black soot on them. Air filter boots were torn which I had to seal with resin so the air only goes through the filters but I do not know how much volume of air goes through these non-stock air filters.

On my next visit I'm gonna check float heights and whether correct jets are installed. Also, what should I do furthermore to make the bike running again. Floats are okay as there is no fuel overflow/leakage. I'll update on my next visit to him.

Nothing that you aren't already going to do.  Any updates???

Hiya!

Ordered a stock airbox, put in the air filter. Stock airbox rubbers sealed nice and tight.

Opened the carbs, checked and adjusted float height (the float line parallel to the carb case), checked jets to be 20,60,130 (its a 2nd gen carb on GS500E). Cleaned through carb cleaner, didn't went generous to preserve the o-rings. Both pilot screw seals are ok.

Now the update:

Bike starts up on choke engaged, upto 1.5K RPM. Touching throttle gets bike hesitant but gain RPM only when choke is enganged. Right cylinder is a late warmer, left cylinder starts its warmup good.
As soon as I let go of the choke, it stalls.

Checked the carbs. I feel like the jet channels are gunked up? or the main fuel flow loop is gunked up so it doesn't reach as it should on choke enganged?

Spark is there in both cylinder which is evident from the warming up.

He is ordering another set of carbs from UK.

Is there anything else I should do? signal generator (well that would need me to open valve cover as well), valve clearance factor?

Thank you so much for the reply. I had to make time to visit him

valves are crucial, clean carb is a must,
signal generator(pickups)usually fail when warm
