One last problem to sort out

Hey,
So prior to this riding season i finally got around to taking the carbs out and give them a good cleaning as well as replacing my spark plugs since the bike wasnt riding too well at the end of last summer.  So i found out the choke cable wasnt working and the plugs were really bad.  Now i do think i need a new battery because it doesnt hold a charge very well.  However there is one more problem that i cant figure out how to fix.  The problem is this when ever i am stoped with the clutch all the way in the bike will idle realllly high, im talking like 4000-5000 rpm with the choke off.  Its not the idle screw because every once in awhile it will idle where its suppose to.  When im riding everything goes just fine until i stop and have to control the idle by letting the clutch out a little bit, which im sure is doing wonders for my clutch.  So any comments and suggestions are more then welcome.  Thanks

you will have to wait untill either the guru's wake up, or the drinkers sober up to get a answer,

my first inclination is that you have a vacuum leak.... have you checked all you vacuum hoses for splits, etc?
does it idle high in neutral also? or only in gear with the clutch pulled?

I wonder ... what if you pull the clutch in while you're moving at traffic speeds?  You should theoretically experience the same high idle.

I've got 2 thoughts:
    1) You mentioned in an earlier post that a shop was going to make you a new choke cable.  Do you have a shop-made choke cable in the bike?  I ask because your choke
may still be ON a little bit all the time.  (Cable too short?)  You mentioned above that sometimes the idle is correct, which COULD happen with the choke on after the bike is good and warm.  (In fact, I have found that with stock jetting my bike will DIE at a stop light if the choke is on even a little -- when it's good and warmed up.)  Compare the "business" end of your (turned OFF) choke cable with my close-up photo again, to see if it looks fully extended.

2) You said that you "[took] the carbs out and [gave] them a good cleaning".  Having goofed this up myself, I wonder if you got the carbs all the way back on the rubber intake boots.  Try the ol' WD-40 test to see if there's an air leak on either side.  Extra air will cause a lean condition, which can result in too-high RPMs.[/list:u]

hey guys, thanks for the replies
As far as the choke cable goes, they didnt actually make me a new one like i origianlly thought, they actually found a used replacement somewhere in there shop.  When i installed it, it did appear to close all the way.  Can you elaborate on what vacum tubes exactly to check?  Also a little more on what the WD-40 test is all about? Thanks again

With bike idling... spray wd40 around the carbs... if the rpm goes up or you see white smoke in the pipe... you sucking air. If you dont... you're just lean. If lean, open air screw out 1/2 turn, or fit 40 pilots in it. If sucking air... locate where from... more wd 40... and fix it.
Cool.

Thanks for the help guys,
i will def try the WD-40 test, also, say it is one of any of the vaccum hoses, how do i go about getting replacements for those?? thanks again

I haven't been able to determine the model year of your bike by examining you past threads.  The (one and only) vacuum hose was rerouted starting with the 2001 model, so I can't look up the correct hose on BikeBandit or Ron Ayers until I know.

Once we find the correct part you will need to decide whether to order online or from your dealer.

But before you order anything, you want to be reasonably sure that a new [insert name of part here] is going to make a difference.  The vacuum hose is the one that runs from the back of the frame-mounted ON/RES/PRI petcock to the left carburetor (on '1989-2000 models) or to the right carburetor (on 2001+ models).  Check that hose for cracks, splits, brittleness, etc.  If it all looks good, then don't just replace it ... yet.

Kerry,
Thanks for all the helpfull replies.  As for the bikes its a 93 Gs.  Seeing as monday and tuesdays are my only days off it might have to wait til monday to take the tank off again to do the wd40test and look at the hose.  I'll let you know what i find out though

thanks

Just an idea that popped in my head when I was reading this thread. Could the accelerator be sticking? Does the accelerator cable need some attention? Does the accelerator roll back easily or is it a little sticky?

Have you done the checks described above?  If you determine that the vacuum hose is cracked / whatever, then here is the info you need to order another one:

From Ron Ayers (this shows the OEM Suzuki part number, if you want to order from a local dealer).

From BikeBandit (it's item 53).

i had a weird porblem similar to this when i first put the drag bars on my bike.  It had to do with the throttle cable being stretched in a strange way.  With the bars to the left or facing straight ahead the bike idled fine.  If i turned the bars to the right  the idle would shoot up due to pinching of the throttle cable.  Solution was easy, Put a little slack in the throttle cable by adjusting  right under the grip with the two little nuts.

may be a possibility :dunno:
