Hey guys,

Ok so i just got the handlebars on my bike from srinath. Now i realize that there's no way for me to mount the stock barends because i'm missing the internal nut that's on the old bars that allows the bar end bolt to screw into.

IS IT NORMAL TO NOT HAVE THESE INTERNAL NUTS (ON OTHER BARS?)? WHAT DOES EVERYONE ELSE DO? AM I MISSING SOMETHING? SHOULD I BE BUYING SOMETHING AT CYCELGEAR?

HELP!

the stock bars on the 2001+ gs500's, and most (all?) aftermarket handlebars do not have that internal welded peice. You need to swap the bar ends for the kind that have a rubber expanding bushing at the end (like most aftermarket barends will have) or install bar end mirrors and be done with it.... :dunno:

OH! I didn't realize i had to switch over to different barends.

  Wow, i feel stupid now. I'll call my local cycle gear ASAP. I love how those bars look though, totally transform the look of the bike.

So did you just get the bars in the mail from him?  I'm hoping so, because that means there back from powder coating and on their way to me tooooo.   :)   I can't wait to try them out!

The Buddha

OK Brandiwine... while that could be true... Its not... I had 2 from the returns which I retrofitted of which you bought one and he bought the other... then when I said powder coated new batch... you said yes I'll wait, but he said no he wanted it sooner... that was almost 3 weeks ago. U"PMS"  lost the first bar, we opened a claim with them that they again lost (I think) and I sent him the bar that had your name on it... and that was what he was talking about. The new lot of bars are going to the powder guys tommorow. Be back by Friday and get sent out friday/saturday. And yours are in that set.
Cool.

Can I buy one of your new handlebars, or are they all spoken for?
I love YOU goes to college.

The Buddha

There is no spoken for... the spoken for list is so loooong I think Martha Stewart and her South african counterpart Nelson Mandela are on it...
Send me $$$ and I'll send you, if supply is running low I'll post saying there is the last 1 or 2 or 3 left. That's when the mad rush begins. But so far, they have just been dropped off at the powder coaters, and will hopefully be back friday or monday at the latest ... I have 1 payment made (Thanks and sorry Brandi) on it and that means the rest are all available. The new lot is $45+ shipping, (price hike due to powder coating). So in other words There is a set for you Kee at this point. SD shipping is just under $11, If you want to paypal (and I dont see why you would want to, cos your checks serves as a reminder... ) they charge ~$2 at the withdrawl stage... so please add that. Personal checks are better IMHO, and no additions to the 45+shipping on those. Send them to Srinath Seshadri, 9227 swallow tail lane, Charlotte NC 28269.
Cool.

Damnit, got these bars on... and now i realize if i had waited i would have gotten powder coated for a few bucks more??!?!?!?! CRAP! I didn't realize there was a powder coat option. Doesn't matter to me though, i love the bars! I was up to 2am fixing the damn thing though... makes it hard to go to work the next day... riding helps   For some reason my clutch signal switch got moved out of position and i spent most of the night retearing the bike apart and reading the wiring schematic in the service manual. What a stupid problem, and what a pain in the ............

Thanks for being cool srinath, you're a pretty good guy.

Mercdude: newb here but mechanically inclined.  how difficult was the bar to replace? how long did it take you?
2004 Black GS500F

heh, it's like we're identical. I'll say that it took max hours for me (minus the troubleshooting and BS i went through) about 2-3hours. That's probably just because i've never done it before. If i had to do over again it'd be about 1.5hrs. It's pretty simple... just a piece of advice, get your bar powdercoated and buy barends, throttle grips before the project begins. Then be ready to get replacement lockwashers/nuts to go on the end of the aftermarket barends. Oh, lastly... get ready to cut the aftermarket barends rubber pieces (that wedge inside the bar to make the barend stick in the bar) to fit inside the bar. It's really not that hard, but i had no idea i'd be making about 3 trips to stores... wasted a lot of time.

My reaction after seeing/riding it: they pretty much rock. Makes you feel like you are riding a much more expensive sport bike (like cbr600... which i had, god rest its soul). However, you will take away some ridability/ergonomics because of more pressure on the wrists. Oh also... no one told me this either, but BOTH handlebar switches, left and right side, have little notches in them. You should drill the bar to accomdiate these. I recommend to do this AT LEAST on the right side iwth the throttle. I was going to do it with the left side, but i put the grip on before i realized there was a little peg on the left switch side as well which kept me from drilling so i just cut it off. Just a FYI. Hope this helps. If you/anyone runs into a problem i will try to help as best as possible... so shoot me an PM or email if needbe. I check here pretty regularily.

Those nubs on the switches... OK I like to cut them off but with a blunt pliers, so they get chewed up... and not cut clean... that grips the bar well... they is also 2 sided tape to grip them if you wanted better grip... use the softet foamy kind... not the thin emblem tape... that might be permanent.
Cool.
