I did a search but couldn't find anything on this issue...

I was relubing the chain last night and thought I would check the oil. Well it was reeeeall low (below the min line). I couldn't get on the internet to check out what you guys recommended so I had to wing it. So I went over to AutoZone to pick up some oil. There the confusion began. I knew I needed 10w-40 but they had non-synth, synth, motorcycle specific 2 stroke, 4 stroke, small engine, etc.

I thought I would take the safe route and get the Motorcycle specific oil, but like a deer caught in headlights, couldn't decide whether I needed 2-stroke or 4-stroke. Well I picked up a quart of 2 stroke cause I figured maybe GStwin also stood for "2" stroke. So i went home and fed my starving GS and happily rode to work this morning.

Got to work and did a search, and find out that the GS is a 4 stroke engine and that I didn't need motorcycle specific oil... DOH!!!

Is the 10w-40 2 stroke motorcycle oil ok for the GS or should I drain it all ASAP! S.O.S.!!!

holy crap man....two stroke oil gets mixed with gas and is totally different than crank case oil....next time just use some soapy water....thats all you really need :thumb:

I would drain it and replace the filter ASAP.

I'm not sure if you HAVE to, that's just what I'd do.

Its oil. You could probably get away without changing the filter, but changing it is probably the prudent thing to do.

But difinately don't run it (or do and tell us what happens  ;)  ).

oil is oil in my opinion.....once i used auto trans fluid in the engine of my ford festiva haha

it ran and didn't have problems but i only added like 1 liter.....

well as you already know 2 stroke oil is mixed with gas but it should lubricate the gs....you shouldn't have problems but are you willing to take a chance of braking something for a $10 oil change?

2-stroke oil most basically refers to an oil that you mix with gas to be burned. Unless it is 2-stroke engine(read: gearcase, for those 2-strokes that have seperate crank- and gear-cases) oil, change your oil.

Got a question for you.  Why didn't you just ask one of the employees at Autozone what to buy?  :dunno:   I realize they're not necessarily geniuses, but at all the shops in my town there's at least one or two people who are suprisingly knowledgeable.

OK its oil that's meant to be applied to upper cylinders... I doubt its going to do too well under pressure and bearing lubrication... So change it, and the oil you put in could be car oil or some cheap ass 10w40 oil but you change that also in a couple 100 miles... to get all the 2 smoke residue out. Just what I'd do... oil is cheap and so are filters... not worth motor work... BTW my rap for being a cheapskate, is actually more like being cheap wihtout giving up on the quality... I'll buy bike oil sure, but at walmart where they sell for $1.59 a quart instead of ghey ass bike boutique where the same damn thing is $3.99... So I'll do that.
Cool.

I asked the guy at the counter what the difference between regular oil and motorcycle oil was, he said they add special additives -  he didn't say anything about the 2 stroke or 4 stroke difference though...

I rode into work this morning, hope I make it home tonight. I'm changing it asap. Thanks for all your advice, maybe I'll try soapy water next  ;)

Olive oil man. It smells great. If your not sure if an engine is a 2 or 4 stroke, and easy give away is the loud ass twangy sound that a 2 gives.

AFAIK, there is no such thing as 10w-40 2 stroke motorcycle oil. If the oil you purchased is specifically for 2-strokes, it will either be pre-mix oil or gear oil. The pre-mix oil is mixed with the gasoline to keep the cylinder lubed. The gear oil is used in the trans/bottom end.

Double check the bottle and see if it says "pre-mix" or "gear".

If you used pre-mix oil, drain and replace immediately. It is unlikely that you did any damge since most of the oil still in the bike is regular stuff, but the misapplication of the 2-stroke won't be helpful.

If you used gear oil, it isn't too different than the standard oil you would normally use. Again, since most of the oil in the bike was regular stuff, topping off with gear oil isn't so bad. I'd still recommend drain and replace.

I just wanted to post an update:

Friday: made it home ok, though I had visions of my GS turning into a giant fireball underneath me, so I took it easy.

Saturday: I went over to AutoZone and picked up some 10w-40 Semi-Synthetic, a STP SMO-00 filter, and an oil pan. Drained the old 2 stroke blood of death, installed the new filter, and put in 3.1 quarts of the good stuff.

Today: rode to work, the bike sounded a little rough at first, but seemed to smooth out by the time I got to work. I'll check it out again at noon.

Thanks for all your advice - I'm changing my moniker to "2-Stroke"...
