GS500 - Tach. problem

Hi,

I have a 1990 GS500 with an annoying problem ...

The face plate with the numbers printed on it inside the tachometer is held on by 2 screws. These screws have somehow vibrated out on my GS500, leaving the face plate spinning freely inside the tachometer. Needless to say, this makes it hard to read.

So, I can't for the life of me see how to open the tach up to screw the face plate back on. Removing 2 screws at the back allows the whole tach to be lifted out, revealing a white plastic container with the glass plate on the front. Removing 2 screws from the back of the white plastic container allows the tach unit to move within its container. But, I have no idea how to take the glass plate off the top to give me access to the tach face plate inside.

Do any of you have any suggestions? It doesn't seem to screw off, nor does it seem to pop off, though I have not yet forced it to its breaking point to verify that these 2 approaches fail completely.

Thanks for your help.

Its sealed you'll either have to pry the bezel off to remove the lens and try to replace it with the minimum of destruction, or carefully cut around the plastic cup of the housing fix the face and glue it back together with ABS cement.

Suxs. Don't forget to use locktite unless you feel like doing it again in another 14 years.

I can vouch for this method.  I made some cuts around the perimeter of the bezel :dunno:  and pried it off, then crimped it back on to finish.

Thanks for the tips.

One question though -- I'm not sure I follow what you mean by making cuts around the perimeter of the bezel ... as far as I recall, there is the white plastic container, with the lid being a glass plate set in a black plastic ring; the black plastic ring is sealed to the white plastic container.
Are you referring to cutting the white plastic or the black plastic?

Thanks again for the help.

Sorry, I was talking older model with metal trim ring securing the glass cover.    No, plastic doesn't crimp but, maybe, can be glued back together.

The white part that you normally don't see when the panel is assembled.

Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it. I think I'm going to attempt some tach surgery ...
