eh...

I can think of better power plants for something that big.

Like the precarious gas tank mounting.

That's going to be a pokey little buggy.  I hope they have good handholds for when the passenger gets out and pushes it uphill...

I'm helping a friend build a sandrail with an older Jetta engine.

My friend wants to make a motorcycle powered golf cart; probably something like a CBR engine though.  Maybe it will happen in a few years when he graduates and has some money

eh is right....i think the engine is barley enough to push me on the gs

cernunos

Well it is a single seater and looks not much bigger than those carts you can get at Northern Tool and other places. Plus, if it's geared for off-road it's gonna be a lotta fun. Figure 38 HP and 500-600 lbs with driver and you have a weight/power ratio of say 14 or 15. Lots of cars would love to have that kind of w/p. It's bound to beat a Briggs 5 horse   Ya know I love this little scooter and the scooter forum.

Yeah, but that engine can "barely push you" at 100+ mph.  I don't think the buggy builder was planning on those kinds of speeds off-road.  :)

Like cernunos said .. gear it down and WHEEEE!

Offroad, you need torque!  High-revving horsepower won't really come into play.

Kerry

Good point!  Shows you how much _I_ know about off-roading....

If you're driving a big off-road truck, yes - you need lot's of torque. But for a small, light buggy with appropriate gearing, the GS engine is just fine.

Afterall, we have cars with less than 45HP rolling on our streets around here today:

or

And lots of those too!

Anyone remember Grumpy? he ran a mini-sprint powered by a gs500e engine and swore by them. They will scoot....

Remember your average 5-8 hp lawnmower engine will get a go cart moving at what...15-25  mph ??  And thats not alot bigger than a Go cart...

Wish I could find Grumpy's Email...
When the 2nd Amendment is lost, the rest will soon follow.

Torque is LBs-FT Damn it.
Yeah that was me.    One of my rides

But rolling around streets is a different matter from slogging your way though a foot of mud at a near-90 degree angle.  :)

In order to have the same torque/weight ratio as my friend's Wrangler (which is a very capable offroader), the buggy would have to weigh under 500lbs - easy for a bike, hard for a 4-wheeled chassis!  A guy I know in Portland is making a supercar with a Hayabusa engine, and is calling 700lbs an ambitious goal.  And he's using lightweight not-trail-hardy materials.

I'm not saying it couldn't work, but it's iffy - and I'd rather have a firmer chassis and a bigger engine to haul it if I'm going rock crawling. ;)  On sand, it'd go, but it'd be a snooze.
