going to take the permit test for the motorcycle permit next week (already took MSF).  one question, i heard that im going to need to take the motorcycle permit exam as well as the Class C permit exam if i haven't taken that in the past year, is this true? or am i just going to have to take the motorcycle written exam.

hope its not true, then i need to start studying both books blah...

I got my motorcycle liscense in CA... i took the motorcycle school which counted as my riders test... i just went down and took the written test at the dmv (i already had my a current cali drivers liscense). So if you liscense is valid and  current you should only have to take the motorcycle written test to get your endorsement.... but the best way to find out the answer is to call the dmv

i just got my permit and i had to take 1/2 of the regular driver's written exam and then the whole motorcycle written exam.  there is a bunch of questions and you are allowed to miss 4. any more after that, you fail.  you can also download the handbooks from the website or just get them at the dmv and study while you wait.  

i've already got my regular driver's license..so after i take the MSF course, all i need to do is bring in my DL389 certificate and i should be able to get my license right away since i already completed the written motorcycle  exam.

did that make any sense?

I had to take the written car test when I took the motorcycle test. It was really easy and did better on that then my motorcycle test. Unless you do really, really bad on the regular test, I don't see them taking your license away.

I had to take both the motorcycle and driver test. I didn't know I had to take the regular drivers test and I failed it but I passed the motorcycle test. I went back a few weeks later and retook the driver test and they gave me the M1. If you haven't taken the class C test in a while I would at least skim over the downloadable handbook.

wow lots of san diegans in here. i just took my permit test today, got 2 wrong. just waiting for my msf class and ill be set :mrgreen:

Same here. Caught me by surprise but I passed both. I was told that since they'd be issueing you a new license that you have to take both again, not that its a time based thing.


Also, you arent going to take the full car test, only one half of it. They give you the test and tell you to only do the front questions.

thanks guys..now i need to prepare a little more...one more question i know you are allowed four questions wrong on the motorcycle permit, but how many questions wrong are you allowed on the car permit?

I just went through this a few weeks ago. The deal is, if it's been more than six months since you last took the driving written test, you have to take it over-BUT, it's only half of the test. So, you have to take the complete motorcycle test(which if you've taken the MSF course, and looked over the DMV booklet is a breeze) and then the first 18 questions on the driving test. I don't know the limit on questions. I know I missed 2 on the cycle, but there was a guy there who also took it...looked like he didn't have a clue-he missed 11-DAMN
