At 44939 miles ... it shattered the rotor  :(  - aka "goats syndrome"  ... I was afraid its 44939th mile would be its last  :( . However after pilfering the rotor, starter clutch, alternator coil and case cover (dont want to waste time unscrewing the coil from my case cover) from the spare motor, and dropping and cleaning the oil pan and installing new gaskets on the case and bottom, and changing oil and filter... it roared back to life   :) ... only to die 3 mins later  :x , due to a loose rotor bolt  :x . Then more swearing and a bent penny later :x ... it roared back to life again  :) ... only to have me search for the gear shift lever for hours  :? ... It also had a stuck choke cable  :x , a bent clutch push rod  :x , I stuffed a bolt in the oil return hole  :nono:  in the alternator side, to see where it goes and to retreive any magnet pieces... only to have it get stuck inside :x where the hole is more constricted, and had to open the right side to get it out  :dunno: ... which BTW revealed a clean clutch and crank and everyhting   ... and finally its back together and running...    So my question is... is my bike suicidal  :?  ... does it want to be out of this misery  :?  ... Anyway 20 miles later its looking like it has to endure me for a few more 1,000,000 miles only  . So let that be an encouragement to all of you... Yes "goats syndrome" can be cured on a GS ...

congrats! you fixed "goat's syndrome" faster than goat did!

But then again, that wouldn't take much. That's what happens when you can only spend weekends on your bike  :dunno:

Ok You did it right... Your bike was 5K mile, with all its life ahead of it... mine is 45K and has been on its last legs for a good 10K miles+, uses more oil than gas, and is near about falling apart... I drained oil, took off the pan and tossed it on the left side on a couple of old tires... and made sure all metal went out... and back together. Quick and dirty... Very dirty. Mine has to be rebuilt... completely... just not right now.
Cool.

:guns:  :guns:  :guns: What was that supposed to mean... I did open the right side and see it had no magnet bits... didn't I...  :bs:
Anyway... mine fragmented far better than goats did... even when it died... it died from a battery not getting charged, and the rotor was nicely stuck to the coil and the bits were all in the bracket on the bottom, and none on the crank even, through the holes in the inner cases. The oil out of the left case goes to the right side... clear to under the clutch... checked and chased that part with a bolt and then a steel rod... no magnets there, none in the clutch, and best of all, the passage wasn't even partly blocked.. so no chance of oil fill and over flow into the case holes and onto the crank and then into the pan... I mean it was clean and I made certain it was always so... Kill it yes... probably from old age...
Cool.

Congradualtions on another successful repair job!

If I didn't know how to work on bikes I'd send my carbs to ya.
