yesterday, I got bob's ignition advancer.  Its fairly late in the afternoon and i'm having a smoke.  I got this idea of actually putting it in and going for a test run up and down my street.  i'm wearing flipflops, a tanktop and shorts    .talk about being a squid.

i put on the advancer and it starts, flaky but it starts.  I thought it was because it wasn't warm enough so i choked it for a while. err, the bike, not something else.  so i ride my bike up and down the street to feel any difference but its bogging down so i'm thinking this thing doesn't work for the '04.  

i'm on my way back to my house, litterally 3 houses away, when i see a car coming towards me from the opposite direction.  i'm thinking to myself with my luck this is gonna be a cop.  well hell, sure enough it was a cop and she parks behind me where my bike stopped and would not start.  

she says u ran that stop sign there and where is your gear, license, registration?  i told here i live right there and i wasn't planning on going anywhere else just to test the bike because i was having problems with it.  cute female cop by the way, if i wasn't dressed the way i was dressed i would've probably spit some game to her  :mrgreen:

so i give her my social, name and she goes back to check my stuff.  i'm parked on the side of the street and its a busy street , people looking at me like i was some kind of stupid...which i was for that afternoon.  luckily, she was kind enough not to give me a ticket, told me go walk your bike home and next time wear your gear.  must've been my charming good looks..either that or i looked really pathetic and she just felt sorry for me  :dunno:

moral of the story....never go anywhere without a helmet ...specially if you have the kind of luck that i have.

FYI.......bob's ignition advancer doesn't work for '04's.

OK I dont see how it cannot... It worked on davipu's 01... its not got some high tech sensor that can sense the advancer has been modified by bob and fail... Its an inductive pick up with a dwell based advancer... no way it cannot work. Unless the pin location was off set from an 01 ... compare it to your old one... if you haven't sent it... or look at part numbers on bike bandit to see if yours is same as the 01 type advancer.

it looks very much different than the stock.  And I think the pin doesn't even reach the contact point.  it looks like i'd have to "lower" the contact point by making adjustment on the rotor itself.  i'll take pics tonight to show the difference.  without rotor modification, the bike wouldn't even start.

OK the pin I am talking about is the locator pin that is on the crank and on the bottom of the advancer. The tab on the advancer is not supposed to touch the 2 pins that are on the timing plate... its supposed to fly by them... inductive pick up, and the dwell is used by the black box to provide advance. Bob's mod has a smaller tab, making the dwell lower, there by making the bike think its running a higher rpm and that makes a quicker advance to the peak point... so its advanced not just at idle but also all the way to ~3500 or so. Instead of 4500 stock. You reach peak advance at a lower rpm ... and that makes for better combustion.

hmm...the stock advancer has 8 "tabs" all different sizes.  They actually almost make contact with the pin that's on the timing plate.  Bob's advancer only has 1 tab and its considerable shorter, i'd say about 5 mm away from the pin.   if this is by design i don't know, but the bike won't start with it.   :dunno:

OK your stock advancer is entirely different... No way you should have even tried a different one... send a pic if you can though of your stock one... I'll be more certain then...

great...i hope my bike starts when i get home...what damage could've been done?  

I dont know what those additional tabs do... BTW is the 2 parts look totally different to eyeball... I'd not put it n unless someone has tried it on first and is sure of what it does.

yes...very different, i shouldn't have tried it but curiosity took over.   now i think i killed it.....argh!
