Won't idle when hot

Now this is my Maxim 700, but I'm looking for any advice I can get, and I find people here to be knowledgable  :)

The bike starts and runs fine, but when hot it refuses to idle. if it gets to 1000 rpm range it will bog down and I must hold the throttle cranked to get it back up past 1000 and it responds fine. If it stalls I have to wait for it to cool slightly then hold the throttle to the max and start it.  When its cold and up to 15 minutes into a ride it is perfectly fine.  Any ideas?

Have you checked idle speed screws, choke isn't staying slightly on, carb synchronization, sticking float-needles? I'd check for anything that makes it rich. But first I'd just see what happens when you adjust idle speed up...BTW has bike been tuned in awhile? If it needs a basic tune-up it will do wonky things you know. Gotta love the little GS500 and the twin forum.

When the bike is in the idle range it just bogs down and stalls no matter what is adjusted. if I can make it idle at 2 grand its fine though. I think it might show richness in the plugs just cuz I was cranking the throttle to turn it on when hot.

You might check and see if you have a clogged jet on the idle side. I have an old '84 Nissan pickup that does the same thing you mention and it has a clogged air bleed from sitting too long. I know how to fix it but I'm too lazy...as long as we have other things to ride I'll let it go. Make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks, the bike is in good tune and if everything is ok then I would say carb time. You might try running a cleaner through the system that isn't harmful to the carb components. Try to find something that doesn't contain alcohol. Love the little scoot and the forum.
