I've seen a bunch of threads where people sound-off about gas mileage.  For example, one person reports "I can get X mpg", and another posts "I usually get Y mpg"... but there's a big difference between your best mileage, and what you usually get.  It's also hard to accurately fill-up your gastank to the same level each time.

So, what I'm interested in is:
what is the best gas mpg you've ever recorded for a tank?
what is the worst mpg you've ever recorded?
what do you think your typical mpg is?
what parts of your fuel system have been modded (which jets, air, etc.)
what year and mileage is your GS?

No mods...
Best was 65mpg....worst was 45mpg around town.

I'm getting a little over 30mpg right now. Yeah, she's running a LITTLE rich. I'm working on it.

Bone stock '00, ~63mpg.  Biased more towards highway driving, usually 70-75,  keep the revs 5-7K around town.

Back when the 89 was a spring chicken, and they actually had highways in Northern CA... I managed mid 50's... usually 60's and 70's for speed, with very few lights and very little traffic... With 45K miles, I make mid - high 30's wiht K&N pods and open pipe and jetted to the 9's and ridden agressively... yea werase... accelerating in the straights and hitting 90-100+ is agressive, Just those twisties... ewwwww
The other GS bikes have all made more... usually mid 40's for lows and mid 50's for highs... but they all had lower miles.

I think I've seen a trend where the newer GSes get better mileage (the ones with an extra jet in the carb).  So could you include in your post what year your bike is?

Best Mileage: ~58mpg (when first bought )

 --B. Broussard's ignition advancer
 --40 pilot/125 main jets
 --only burned/leaked 1/4 quart regular oil every month


Worst Mileage: 40mpg (current :x )
 --14,800 miles
 --after sitting for 2 1/2 months for fork brace to be replaced from low-speed crash
 --mods still current
 --burns/leaks at least  :guns: 3/4 quart synthetic oil after 5 weeks :dunno:

Best: 3.5 l/100km = ~80 mpg imperial = ~67 mpg US
Average: 5 l/100km = ~56.5 mpg imperial = ~47 mpg US
Worst: 6.5 l/100km = ~43 mpg imperial = ~36 mpg US
I'm not counting the times I was working on the bike and had flush the carbs etc...

Best: 3.8 l/100 km = 62 mpg
Average: 4.1 l/100 km = 57 mpg (pretty consistent when calculated as a moving average over five tankfulls)
Worst: 5.2 l/100 km = 45 mpg

Danci, I believe you'r conversion is off. I think you were converting with imperial (british) Gallons. An US gallon is 3.78541 l.

My float height was almost 5 mm too low before. The GS guzzled about 25% more then...


I find that calculating mileage on just one tank is pretty inconsistent. After all both the "start" (fuel shutoff when pumping) and the "stop" (when do you hit reserve) are pretty fuzzy criteria. I have also found that the trip odometer has a tendency to sometimes flip a digit. Makes it extremely interesting when it happens on the third from the decimal point. I once thought that I'd done a killer mileage, only to find out when I compared notes that the trip odometer was 100 km high...

That float height is really one killer factor... on Srileo's bike I saw that one was waaaay higher, and he was constantly saying it was making 33 mpg or less and it was 40/125 with airbox and pipe... we swapped it for a K&N lunch box, fit 150's in it, and still made close to 50... I guess a higher float causes the bike to spew gas out the back of the carb into the air box where it either collects on the bottom and gets drained or simply runs out... and being gas, evaporates and generally leaves no evidence... either way... set that right will be the first step... Talking of which... I should probably check mine as well... been a while for me.

I bought a 2001 this past January, and I'm getting about 75mpg consistently. It's completely stock, and I can easily do 300 miles without touching the reserve switch. Most of the riding is on twisty, curvy WV backroads, so speed and hard acceleration are not my usual deal.

I have a 90 with 13,800 miles on it.  High is 59, Low is 55.  It's box stock.  I have a windshield on the way.  That should help on the highway.

I pump until the pump shuts off, then angle it and fill until I get to the bottom of the filler neck.  I think that's more accurate than using the pump shutoff... heck, if I have the pump all of the way in, the shutoff comes with about 1.5 gallons waiting to go into the tank.  

Bought the GS a month ago and did some 4.300 kms / 2.670 mi so far (hit 30.000 kms / 18.630 mi today), I am not aware of any mods (except the Givi case and a windshield).

avg is 3,71 l/100 kms (63,4 mpg)

best was 3,16 l/100 kms (74,5 mpg) and that was with my wife as a pillion

worst was 4,51 l/100 kms (52,1 mpg) which was 'performed' by my son... :nana:
my personal worst was 4,05 l/100 kms (58,1 mpg)
