So i was riding along and all of a sudden it felt like i was deaccelerating in like 2 second intervals almost like it had fuel, then no fuel. then i down shifted to get it into a gear to up the rpms... wel as soon as i took it out of gear and the rpms dropped it died! waited a minute and it started again so i started heading for home sure enough same thing happened 1 mile later. so i pul over look at the fule lines... there is fuel... but then i saw something float in the fuel linein the hose right below where you change it from "Reserve to ON" ect it went up into the place where you choose where the fuel comes from? so finally it started again but as soon as i pulled int my neighberhood same thing!

this is terrible i just got the stupid thing:(

could this be something coming from out of the tank? or maybe something else please help me!

We need more info, I'm afraid.  The symptoms sound exactly like what happens when you're low on fuel.  Let's take things one step at a time:
    1) How much fuel is in the tank?  If you can see the "hump" in the forward part of the tank bottom, it would be a good idea to fill the tank, or at least add a good gallon or more.  (The appearance of the fuel level in the tank can be very deceiving.)

I know you said the hoses were full of fuel, but the fuel depth may not be enough to make the vacuum-actuated petcock positions work.  So....

    2) Did the "bogging down" happen with the lower petcock in the ON position?  If so, what happens in the RES position?  If it was in the RES position, what happens in the PRI position?

    3) Is it possible that the "floatie" was an air bubble?  I don't have see-through fuel hoses, so I can't say from personal experience WHAT goes on in there when the fuel gets low.  But if there is an actual object in your fuel line, rest assured that it can be extracted without too much trouble.[/list:u]Fill us in!

My guess would be to run it on PRI and let it idle for a bit.
Would this get the bubble out? :dunno:

Definitely with Kerry that your fuel could be low. Also check the Vac lines, if you're missing a gasket, or one rotted out, that could be drawing air into the line and causing the bubble.

ok it defiently has enough fuel.. i filled the tank up like 50 miles ago (atleast i think i filled it up? i filled it till i thought it was about to come out soo it should have fuel..

the petcock was in the ON position when it originally happened

i will go try it out in the res position.. should i also try riding it in the Pri position?

it could of been an air bubble it went by so fast... the guy did just put the bike together... ive put a total of like 80 miles on it since i got it im assuming thats what it has on it since it was put back together.

ok so maybe it wasnt full.... i went to the gas station and it took a little over 3 gallons.. how much does it hold?

I don't know how much on the newere GS's but mine has never taken more than 4.1 gallons. (1996)

this isnt a new GS its a 1990.. o and it was on its side stand but it came up and almost out the top.. so could it have been that?

Not sure on the exact tank volume, but you were definately out of gas if you just put 3 gallons in.  I usually never put much more than 3 gallons in after I've switched to reserve and ridden for a few miles.  Glad it was an easy solution :thumb:

And if it doesn't run right away, use "Prime" until the carbs fill with gas again and it runs smoothly.  Otherwise always run on "On" until you are out of gas(like you described earlier), then switch to "Res" and go fill up.  Don't forget to switch back to on after every fill up

i ran out of gas my first week driving......i was so mad at the stupid little suzuki....then i found out it was my fault

i  just got my bike less than a month ago. she has been riding like a dream up until this very night.  i just got back from practicing in a parking lot and the same exact thing happened to me. the engine would slow the bike down then get back up to revs then slow itself down again and i wasnt doing anything. like it wasn't getting enough gas or enough air.....this was all around 30 or 40 mph or so and in the low gears. obviously i couldn't get it up past that. finally i pulled over and it stalled. and after i put it in PRI for a bit it started up fine then ran fine for a little bit but the problem came back again.  and there is no way i'm out of gas.  i'm thinking its some sort of fuel delivery problem. dag... :x [/b]

ok i may have been lying when i said "there is no way i was out of gas". alright...i'm an idiot.

lol don't worry it's happened to all of us at least once in our lives.

Im still in the process of figuring out how far I can go on a full tank in my new GS. About 200km before I switch to reserve sound about right? (Depending on wether it's city or highway riding of course).

Your non-CAlifornia '90 model should hold ~4.5 gallons TOTAL.  That includes approximately 1 gallon of REServe.

The most I ever put into my '99 (same tank as yours) was 4.369 gallons(!), and that was after several unplanned, unwelcome stops on the side of the road.  See my receipt (and the story in the preceding 2 paragraphs) on the Day 3 page from my trip to British Columbia last year.  Or read a recap in these 2 GStwin posts.

That fillup also included my usual sit-on-the-bike-and-rock-gently-from-side-to-side-for-the-last-.3-gallons-or-so-until-no-more-trapped-air-comes-out method of FILLing the tank.

Definitely.  Let's say that you still had roughly 1 gallon of REServe fuel in the tank, add the 3+ gallons, and write off the last .3 gallons or so since the bike was on the sidestand.  That comes out pretty close to the 4.5 gallon total.

Definitely sounds like you just ran it out of gas. Move it on over to reserve and continue on.  :thumb:

However, if the same symptoms ever occur and you are NOT out of gas but you recently filled up at an unusual gas station, try putting in some dry gas before you panic. I freaked one day when I got my 'out of gas' symptoms after about 20 miles on a new tank. I quickly just hoped it was water in the tank and used dry gas. No worries after that!  :thumb:

well it was a ID-10-t error... ya im an idiot. i apoligize for bothering you with such a silly problem thanks all for understanding...

and btw what is dry gas?

    hotdog

I had a problem with another bike, the same problem It turned out to be that the air hole in the gas cap was blocked, no air could get in from out side it caused a vacuum in the tank and the fuel pump was fighting to get fuel. Cleaned out the breather hole, ran like a dream ever since. Just my 20cents worth   regards hotdog. :thumb:
