I've heard people swap the stock shocks for a GSXR600 or GSXR750 version.  What do you need to modify, and what do you need to get, to get this swap done.  I'm starting to hear the squishies when I mount my bike.  Time for a swap, and might as well get a mod one.  Any help?

Hi-T

Try to find a Katana 600 shock instead.  That is a direct swap and doesn't require any mods and it doesn't raise the rear very much.  Check out Pantablo's site for more info.

Get an older shock with a remote reservoir - early 90's work well. Only mod is notching the lower mount tabs on the shock with a grinder. You'll see where it needs to be notched when you mock it up.

I saw pantablo's page, but it says the SV650 shock doesn't really do anything for handling.  I'd rather improve a lil' if that's possible

Don't quote me on this, but I don't think the stock SV shock has a whole lot more adjustability than the GS unit. I have a '93 gixxer 750 shock on my bike - offers lots of adjustment - preload, compression, damping, etc.

the shock Hi-T is talking about is one from a Katana 600, not an SV650.  The Katana 600 shock is stiffer and has rebound adjustment in addition to preload (the GS only has preload).

It's a direct bolt-on swap, and IMO, improves handling a LOT.  If you live somewhere where you'll be riding a lot of bumpy roads (like crappy city streets) make sure you set the preload low.  On the highest setting, the Kat 600 shock will knock your fillings loose going over bumps.  In fact, I think the GSXR shock is even stiffer than the Kat 600, so if you're doing real-world riding (not track), you'll probably be happier with the ride quality of the Kat shock.

I got mine off a '96 Kat 600 for $33 shipped (ebay).

Good luck
