Hey fellow GSers,
                          Just thought id give you an update of my slow progress so far, il try to describe things in the best possible way i can and try not to bore you all too much

ok so il update you on how everything started

Bought my GS  though a freind for £80, the bike had not been run or moved for two years so it stayed under a cover in this state. After stuggleing to get the bike on my onto my back yard i took my first pics of her.

After a few days of asking around what to do next i startd to strip her down to remove the carbs to give them a good clean

After cleaning all the crap out of the carbs i rebuilt and replaced them an the bike. 

Im trying to get her running befor i start to spend £100s of pounds on parts i may not need but having little knowlege on bikes im either just following a manual or asking bike technitions and freinds for advise so things are going very slow. also i cant just blow money on parts as mortgage and bills force me to not spend money i havnt got

Any way i decided to strip the panels and tank to start work on them to get them ready for paint.

I removed the front brake calliper as this was seized into place from the lack of movement over the years, so i bought a service kit replace the corroded parts. The kit cost me £40 for pistons and seals which i thought wasnt to bad for genuine parts.

DRAINED TANK OF OLD FUEL (added fresh)
CLEANED CARBS
CLEANED ALL CONNECTIONS ON WIREING LOOM
NEW BATTERY
NEW PISTON AND SEAL KIT FOR FRONT CALLIPER
PRIMED BODY PANELS
MODIFIED REAR LAMP

I decided that i dont like how the rear lamp doesnt follow the lines of the bike so i decided to chop the stock lens go give it a more sleaker look

first of all remove the lens cover

after removeing the cover use masking tape as a guide to where your going to cut, i just did this by eye. mask in a diaganal direction the oposite of the origanal direction like so

after being happy with your masking cut away the lens that is unmasked (excuse the discription being different to the pic i didnt think of taking pics till after id cut it)

Cool, you got a nice EU version with the flash to pass, clip ons, AND a center stand ! Get that gut poker fixed before ya ride man

This evening a freind came round as i was struggleing to get my bike started, he brought a electric probe with him and started to check the wireing and she fired first try found the fault to be a fault starter relay.

sorry im not understanding whats a gut poker? cheers dude for your post. im getting rid of the centre stand i hate the look of it and its a pig to get on it so i will be removing it and selling it. sorry i dont have a vid of starting it i didnt think it would fire but now i wish i had have done. i will order the part i need and maybe do one then.

Nice bike, really like the color.  I remember seeing that bike before on the UK GS500 a long time ago.

Dude i have a bunch of spare parts , for the gs500 including a starter relay that works 100%

need any parts pm me with a list , i do parts cheaper than u will find them anywhere else

i saw other GSs on ebay as non runners over £200 so when this one came about i had to have it.

I think so far ive spend £140 on bits but now ive heard her runnuing i am more open to spending alittle more to get her road worthey.

i went into work today to only notice that a GS is in our bike department at work so after finding out what the fault was with my GS not starting i borrowed the starter relay from the one at work fitted it this evening and she fired first turn.

so here is a pic of the starter relay that has been causing me problems

Those terminals look pretty crappy, your problem might just have been down to the fact they are dirty and corroded.............clean em up and try it again you might just get lucky.

cheers for the advice dude i gave it a whirl but still no joy, i think the internals of the relay is the problem.

If I ever caught you doing this to a bike of mine in your shop, your manager and the owner would be getting an ear full. Thats why I don't bring my bikes to dealers and do the work myself.

By chance, a big chance at that what would have happened if you blew up the relay you "Borrowed", most dealers I know wouldn't own up to it and would state that it must have went bad while sitting for service.

Never use someones bike or part without them knowing, to diagnosis problems with your ride.

holy crap dude befor you tar me with any brush can i just say that im far to honest to not own up to breaking something thats not mine!

If i had broke it i would have bought one to replace it because i hate liers and i would expect anybody else to do the same!

from the pic i showed you you can see that my relay is in bad order and the one i BORROWED! is like new as its from a 2004 500F.

pleased dont judge me as a steriotype as im not im probably one of the most honest people at my work and as a fellow rider i would never make anyone pay for something id damaged! people who do that should be shot.
