so i have to give credit to all you guys up north, drivin home from work tonight the temp is about 39 and i realized that any colder and ridin the bike isn't so much fun lol seems like thats a pretty average temp for you guys up there so all i can say is stay warm!!

btw its suppose to get down to 27 tonight........am i in the right state?

It's been in the teens here and on our local New England forums guys have been seeing people ride and reporting on riding in this type of weather themselves all winter!!

It's pretty crazy how die-hard... or just plain crazy guys in NE states can be

last week, in the cold cold rain, a guy on a honda or HD (cruisers all look the same) merged in front of me. it was around 40F and pouring hard enough for fast wipers in my truck.

i blocked for him for a few miles (people wanting to change lanes too close to him!) then took my exit. if my seat is wet in the morning, i tend to take a four wheeler instead. wimpy ?

Wimpy??? Naaahhh....It's all a matter of choice and where you are in your comfort zone. If you're not comfortable doing it, then you're not going to be as safe as you can be. It's not about heroics or testosterone levels, is it? C'mon... we all ride 500's for heavens sake!

If I'm comfortable with the road and weather conditions, I'll ride; if not, I don't... I'll ride at 20 degrees F if I'm comfortable (although the hands do get cold) for my 50-minute morning commute, and some mornings, I'll roll over and say F'it.

Whatever your choice, be safe about it. One thing's for certain... when it gets cold out, a motorcyclist is the LAST thing a cager is going to expect, so be extra careful... as Mad-Eye Moody puts it... "Constant Vigilence!"

and BTW,

for looking out for a fellow rider!!!

True. It's important to make a personal choice and a mental commitment before riding in cold weather. It certainly takes a lot of extra time to prepare for a ride or commute in the cold -- as compared to hopping into the car in the morning. For me, safety trumps other factors. I'll ride right down to within a degree or two of the freezing point. But when there's ice gathering in the shade, it's time to park the cycle and hop on a bus. I'm usually able to squeeze about eight months of riding here in Ottawa, but it varies a lot from year to year.

I'm looking forward to being back on 2 wheels this spring for the first time in nine years

I think the coldest I've ridden thus far has been just a hair under 30 degrees. That was cold. I don't think I would have done it were it not for the high temp hitting the 60's later that day!! I really don't have the right type of gear for riding in those temps. If I did, I might do it more often. As for the worst of the winter, the roads just have too much crap on them anyway. There's enough to go wrong a perfect sunny summer day, let alone with salt and cinders and patches of ice on the road.

I did see a guy up at Walmart earlier this winter though... I think the high temp that day was 8 or 9 degrees with wind gusts hitting 40 MPH. It wasn't the coldest day of the year, but I'd have to say it was the most brutal! Windchill was -10 or less before his bike ever started moving. NOT my idea of fun!

Half of it is the right gear. After I got a good winter motorcycle jacket, paints and gloves I'm as happy as a clam at 30 degrees.
+1 about comfort level. If you don't like it don't do it. Its not worth it!
I saw a guy with a sidecar earlier this winter on the streets when there was still a good amount of snow and ice on the ground in Seattle. I thought he was crazy, but I gave him a thumbs up as he drove by me. I figured he needed to be appreciated...I know I would want some recognition if I was doing that.

I'll ride in the cold, unless it's going to be wet as well. I don't have any riding pants, so that wouldn't be healthy I think. Coldest yet has been 23*F with 20-30mph gusts. One cold morning I got a thumbs-up from a guy in a pick-up...I wondered why until I saw his motorcycle carrier on the back.

Full Leathers with pants that zip into the jacket, a bacliva (sp) , gloves that go past the wrist and tighten up ( Leather without holes) , proper cloths under neath such as long johns, and motorcycle riding puts that go up high. you wont feel a thing

. you can also use those hot hands warmers if you really are cold still.

a buddy of mine at work all he owns is motorcycles so he rides every day year round rain, snow, storms you name it. he owns a full heated motorcycle Jumpsuit type deal. sais it really keeps him warm and plugs right into the bike. this guy rides to SD cali on a friday afternoon and is back to work on monday morning for the fun of it. from Richmond va
