Can I get back on the list? Don't need it till after January 1st so I can do AJ's when she moves out here...she's long over due. If it gets passed around before then and someone else needs it before me, feel free to skip me.

Hi, I am in need of the smallest "test" shim, not the whole kit.  I did the clearance check tonight and all 4 are way too tight. I cannot figure out what shims I need without the thinnest shim 2.15.  When I am done I can donate 2.62, 2x2.60, 2.65.
Whoever has the kit and willing to send me the shim can you get back to me soon?
TIA

If you can spin the bucket, then there is some clearance.  Get a shim 5 sizes down and measure again.  If it's 260, go with 255.

If can not spin the bucket, get a shim 10 sizes down and measure.  If it's 265, go with 255.
-10 should give you some clearance, so even if it's not spot on, you can still use it till you get your hands on another size.  Just make sure you can spin the bucket.  If you can't spin it, park the bike till you get another size.

There is no need to get a 215.
The dealer can order sizes in incraments of 5, 240, 245 250 255 260.  They don't usually order the off sizes like 252 and 258.  A sticky for off size shim trading would be a great idea.  If you can get clearance within spec with dealer order shims, that will be easier for you than waiting on someone to send one to you.

Shims are cheap from the dealer.  Most charge less than $8 per shim, and will let you swap them for different sizes.

If anyone has a 252, I need it.  Send me a PM please.

I thought I had seen a link on where to buy the hook tool for this kit, but I cannot find it with the search function.  Anyone know?

Once I get a kit together and my bikes adjusted I will be willing to send my kit out too, so we can have three floating around.

It's called Suzuki Valve (Shim) Tool - $18, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VALVE-SHIM-TOOL-FOR-SUZUKI_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43998QQihZ006QQitemZ160039607683QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V

Is there an ongoing list?  who is keeping track?
I now have a shim tool. (THanks Stephen)  When I am done with it I will send it out to whomever needs it.
-----------------------------------------------
I have only One question........ with 26 parts.

so, I have the tool and no shims. The nearest Stealership is 40+miles away.  They do not have a shim exchange program.  Meaning I have to keep what I buy, no trading for different sizes. At $8 a piece, and 80 mi round trips, this could get costly quick.

So I have to do this with No test shims and little room for error.  Any suggestions?

I figure maybe I can take the original shims out and measure the clearance without shims.  Then subtract the necessary clearance.

Might this work?

3imo, just measure your current clearance, lets say you have a valve that is loose, with 0.1mm clearance. remove that shim and measure how thick it is (the markings may be hard to read) and then get the next size larger shim, which come in .05mm incriments. that would bring your clearance to .05mm which is right in the middle of the clearance range.

If the clearance is to tight, then you get the next thinner shim.

If you do this soon, I would appreciate it if I could borrow your tool
thanks

No doubt, you got next.

three of my "clearances" are too tight to measure.   I know the best course of action is to replace the shim with the thinnest and measure.

My problem is that I have no Test shims.

My question is can I take the original shims out and measure the clearance without shims?  Then subtract the necessary clearance.

How thin is your smallest feeler? .001" .002" ? If you can still rotate the bucket and shim, and the bikie still runs okay then there must be some clearance, or just barely no clearance, so I'd recomend pulling out the tight shims and then getting the next size smaller, and maybee two sizes smaller just to be sure. The dealer should take back the un used shims even if they don't have an exchange program (just make sure to wipe off all the oil and say you never used them)

QuoteMy question is can I take the original shims out and measure the clearance without shims?  Then subtract the necessary clearance.

You probally can, and it can't hurt but I'd still just get the next couple sizes smaller shims.
good luck

and I appreciate the offer for letting me use your tool. The west coast valve adjustment kit seems to be moving very slowly.

what's the timeline for getting ahold of these suckers?
and here's a link for shims sold individually if anyone is interested.  Seem expensive.

http://www.procycle.us/hotcams/shim_refills.htm

this place has them for 1/3 the price each.  is there any difference?  why would one place charge $25 and another $8?

Wiki's your friend on a lot of GS questions. Here's one for valves I created - http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Maintenance/CheckValves. There I've also added a link to a place selling shims for cheap.
Good luck! Hurry up boys, Spring's around the corner!
