OK 01+ cap ... impossible wihtout key, has an added tounge on the bottom to keep you from wrestling the cap out with a crow bar, Yea older gs it was possible ... was hard on the cap but yea could be done.

those kind of locks are hard to pick.  they have that little metal 'door' that covers the hole.  google lockpicking and im sure u'll find stuff.  i learned how to pick a house lock with a screwdriver and a saftey pin :)

Don't know if this will help much but the lock on the first tank I had on my GS had been busted with a screwdriver so you could just put anything in there and turn it to open it up.  If you don't care about the lock on the tank cap you might be able to just drill it out.  Don't know... just a suggestion.

He used a little flat L shaped piece ... Like an allen wrench but was flat and had a twist in the short part whihc is what he preloaded the thing with, then he had a straight piece with a little bump in it close to but not at the tip ... that he used to sorta nudge the wafers ... I should start making them ... I do have some high temper stainless sheet lying about ...

As a locksmith, I can tell you that the GS lock is easily pickable.  As far as the two sided key goes, normally any given lock will only use one side at a time (in the case of Ford 5 cut keys for instance, the ignition uses the bottom cuts, and the trunk the top).  I haven't been inside a GS lock, but I would assume it is the case here.  Take the tank to a locksmith (or call a mobile guy like me) and have them impression a key for you, or at least pick it if you can't.

On a side note, its not wise to have picks in your posession unless you are a licensed locksmith, since in many states this alone is unlawful.  It can be taken, in certain circumstances, as intent to commit burgulary.

Anyway, best of luck.

The key is 2 sided, the locks are not ... its 2 sided just to keep you from confusing yourself. You've heard of 1/2 and 1/2 keys ... where someone has a gas cap or ignition replaced and they now have 2 keys for the bike, so they decide to cut 1 profile into 1 side and the other on the other side ... Its a cheap ass lock, anyone should be able to open it ... BTW ... I have opened up the thing from the inside ... its nothing much ...

That's exactly how my '99 works.  (See the old Finally had a key made! thread.)  I put my thumb on the plain side of the key to insert it into the ignition and the gas cap, and on the stamped side to unlock the seat.
