Quote from: '04gs500fwhat i can't understand is that they insure my GS at a reasonable price... how can they possibly quadruple the price for a zx-6r....

does your insurance come with sexual favors or something?

i live in Los Angeles and my comprehensive coverage is something like $330 a year.

i understand that you're 19 while i'm 27, but $1500 still sounds damn expensive.  course, your bike's probably also worth a lot more than my 1994.

cheers,

I'm paying $450 a year for  full coverage on my '97 TL1000 and liability for the '98 GS.  26 single with a clean record, endorsment, MSF course, and 1 year riding.  Insurance through progressive.

If I add a 2005 GSXR1000 to the other two bikes it will only be 1800 a year for full coverage on the TL and GSXR and liability on the GS.  Not sure why everyone else is getting such high quotes.  Maybe it is just the area you live in.  1650 if I replace the TL with the GSXR.  Not worth buying a newer bike if my rates are gonna go up that much.  I checked and it seems that progressive pretty much goes by engine size when calculating rates.  Any sport bike at or above 1000 cc for the same year comes out to an almost identical premium.

Quote from: octaneBlame the squids. Statistically, the insurance company will be paying a total loss claim on that ZX6 within 3 months. That's how they justify the sport bike rates. If there was a regulatory system in this country to prevent dicknuts with no sense from buying 150 hp superbikes for their first two wheeler since the training wheels came off their bicycle, we wouldn't have so many accidents, so many claims, and such high premiums.

I'm 30 years old - pay $124 per year on my GS for liability. Got a quote on a R6 - $3,000. I asked the agent why, he replied with the statistic above. Doesn't matter that I've NEVER made a claim in 14 years of driving and 10 years of riding.

how do any of the idiots that actually start riding these kinda bikes afford it???????

you are 30 and get quoted $3k a year thats f*cking nuts!!

My very conservative side is started to rear it's ugly head. If you can't afford it you don't need it. Just be patient and you'll eventually get in the financial situation to buy the bike you want.

i can finance the bike no problem, and yes i know its typical to want bigger and better ... ive decided to keep the GS, but i mean it's just not affordable for anyone my age to pay that kind of money each year...guess in the end it doesnt matter, ha even if i could pay for the bike in full the insurance would still kill me and i would NEVER go without full coverage *shrug*

I'm 17 now but I can still find a way to fork out $5k+ a year for insurance.....my advice, suck it up you sally's cause it's not gonna get any better. :)

I just got a quote of 502.00 annually from Allstate.  They are trying to compete with Progressive and just started offering decent bike rates.  My cars are with them, and I waived the medical coverage because I have that with work.

When I called the first guy says "GS500?  Suzuki?   Is that one of those fast ones?"

I'm like "they're all fast, but no, it's probably not one of those fast ones...."

You are getting reemed. I just got my first bike and am fully insured for 760 a year for 2004 gs. Shop around, get an agent, they can save you a bundle.

Quote from: goatI have my bike insurance with Progressive. No collision, comprehensive

Comprehensive covers up to the replacement cost, for damage done by an unknown party, including theft, vandalism, etc.  It won't cover collision costs, when you are at fault... unless the other driver takes-off, and then fault can't be established, and it becomes an "unknown party".

So if you cause an accident, pay-off everyone else to go home :) .

I just got my first bike last wednesday, a 1997 gs500e.  I have completed the MSF coarse, I am also 19 years old, but I have no moving traffic violations.  My insurance through Progressive on my bike is $111 for 12 months for liability.  Look for another insurance provider - compare rates or something.  Good luck dude,  :thumb:

there is a price diff between insurance companies.

First 2years i was full coverage with GEICO cycle gaurd. Then I moved to Bike-Line.net for the last 2 years just liability.

Presently I pay 113/yr for liablity on the GS ( i hardly ride to justify full coverage)
With GEICO i used to pay between 650-750/yr full.

Bcak then geico was teh cheapest for a new rider.
