I just started riding and I love my GS.  I'm sure my GS will keep me occupied for couple years but when I want to get a bigger bike, what would you guys suggest?  I love naked bikes so I was thinking SV650.  But also looking at GSXR-600.  I'm not going to buy any of these for about 2 years but I was just wondering what would make the most sense.   :)

it depends :)
I am planning to try to ride as many bikes as I can before i make that choice, if you just go by other people's advices, you are buying someone else's "perfect bike"
JUST IMHO

Doing nothing until the two years are up and you're READY to buy another bike.

Things change, new models come out.  Just relax and see what's out there when the time comes.

BTW, I'm into I4s more than v-twins if that helps.

i've always thought the sv would be my next choice and after riding a couple of them i realized i was right :dunno:   go figure.  it's got a very similar riding position to the gs, maybe a bit more stretched out, which felt really comfortable for me.  i'm 5'10'' and i don't feel cramped on the gs, but the sv felt good.  the power is just amazing compared to the gs.  i'm sure i don't need any more than that.  perfect example:  i was riding my bro's sv a couple weeks ago and my gf was riding pillion.  i rolled on the throttle to merge onto a ramp in 2nd gear and the friggin front end came up!  needless to say, my gf wasn't very happy and i was a little surprised.  and from what i hear about insurance prices for the sv vs. 600 class sport bikes, it's an economical choice as well.

if you're going to ride your gs for 2 years you can move up to pretty much anything at that time. get whatever stirs your soul or whatever is best suited to the type of riding you'll be doing. trackdays?-gixxer 750 would be my first choice (after my 600rr of course).

thanks for your opinions.  I don't know if I'm really into super sporty bikes.  My friend has a ducati 749 and I don't like it very much.  I really do think the SV is for me but like I said, I'm going to wait around for 1-2 years before really looking into new bike.  I was just curious.  Thanks guys - you guys got a great forum here!!

I do want to get a new exhaust on my 96 GS.  know any websites that sells them?  looking for either V&H, or Yoshi.

my good friend has an '02 sv650 that's sweeter than hell and is incredibly powerful with just a few mods... i just had a V & H that was on my '00 GS for like 4 months, and got for about 280... the place is outta business but bikebandit.com sells it for about 310 or so...  the vance sounds very nice, gives it a nice growl that definitely turns heads, i've heard good things about the yosh as well... good luck!

Maybe, in two years, you'll find that the GS is the perfect streetmobile. ;)

as much as I drool over bigger, different bikes...
Speed 3, sv650, sv1k (unfaired), monster 620 dark, I hop on the gs and it still brings a smile to my face... i could afford a different bike.... but the gs is wonderful and it makes me happy

You have to look at what you need the bike for.
Short distance or long distance touring.
To me a bike is the means to an end.

right now i'm using it for just pleasure.  riding when the weather is nice.  I don't really use it for main transportation.

Well I have been on mine for 2yrs and 25k miles, and I think you absolutely right...
Although I do still want to upgrade, it is seeming las and less necessary.

As far as wich bike, the 650 is going to be VERY simular to the GS with ALOT more power.
Any 600 supersport (IE, Gsxr-600, Cbr600 ext....) is going to be VERY sporty.
They are pretty much street legal race bikes.

MY choice is the Sv1000, but it all depends on what you want...
Come back in about 2 yrs and ask again.

And an SV with the optional fairing becomes one nice looking bike!

Yea Im in the same boat as you are, waiting another two or three years to upgrade.  If I had the money and was going to do it now it would be hard to pass up a SV1000S or an SV650S, I think I would then go with either a Gixxer 600 or a F4I, but I think the SV line would be first in my book, unless I really felt something I didnt like when test drove them.  I need to quit talking bout this new bike business, Ive already got the Suzuki website up and and getting really excited,  :guns:  I have 3 more years :x  :guns: , stupid insurance.

I am pretty much set on the SV1000.....

The SV's with the full fairings do look awesome. A bit like the R6's, but even more raw and jagged.

SVs have a much more even torque curve vs a 600 inline 4 right? Everyone tells me that's better for the city. Personally, I like hearing my engine scream, so I'd be more likely to go for the GSXR. (I also would LIKE a much farther reach to the bars. I'm 6'3 and the GS500 puts my torso right into the wind unless I bend way over.)

Still, just about any bike bigger than 500cc will seem  fast and powerful compared to the GS.

If you want the I-4 power delivery with a naked, don't forget about the Honda 599 and 919.  They are overpriced by about a grand for what you get, but if a deal came around, I certainly wouldn't be opposed to owning one myself.

I chatted with a guy at my local dealership a few weeks ago when he rolled up on an '04 919 in Matte Uranium (below) with dual micron pipes on it.  It was gorgeous[/b]  :thumb:

you can get a good deal on the 919's used ~$5000.  no one seems to want them.  you may even be able to get a good deal on a new one too.  the 599's aren't worth it unless for some reason you want to stick to the smaller motor (insurance?).  they are hardly any cheaper than the 919 and are carburated whereas the 919 has fuel injection.
