The State Farm Insurance web site is featuring a list of the 10 Most Dangerous Intersections in North America (yup, Canada is included).

The page allows for a sub-search for the Top 10 on a per State or Province view.  If you live in these towns then be afraid -- be very afraid of these corners.

Notice anything in common with them?

The most popular excuse of those that caused the accident? "Honest Officer, I never saw him!!"

Thank God my state is not in the top 10.   But, I do have a number one for my state right down the road!  :o

None of the top 10 are places I go regularly...  So, hopefully I'll luck out!

Every place is dangerous.  I was out with my soon to be 10 year old son.
We came to a red light at an intersection that you can only go left.
Light changes and the car in front of us moves into the intersection.  There are two lanes.  It goes into the near lane.  A woman comes at full speed through a red light into the far lane.  Passes the car in the near lane, makes a left into the near lane and a left into a side street.
She was on a cellphone.  It was a handsfree.  I could see her lips moving as she did all thisl.  She did not have a clue as to what she did.  If I would have been by myself I would have chased her down and called a cop and filed a complaint.
The scary part is that she was not a nut.  Could have been anybodys mother or sister.

I noticed that most of the problem intersections were:
  • Multi-lane in all directions.
  • Poorly lane marked.
  • Not divided at the intersection.
  • Have hanging Stop lights that can easily be anticipated.[/list:u]It's a jungle out there.  Ride defensively...

Ditto

One problem is, heading East, the far right lane becomes a right turn only.  Too many people try to drive all the way up and then cut in front of everyone else in the next lane over (straight lane) rather than turning.

Florida drivers flat-out suck.  Everyone here seems to think they are the center of the universe.

Not very comforting to know I live near all the intersections listed in Mobile.  Shoot they are all probably within a 5 mile radius of each other.   :dunno:

Well #10 - Fair oaks and Howe - insane amount of traffic cos in sac there is only 2 ways to get across the river ... so bus 80 to 80 cross overs as well as in town commuters need to be through that Int ... Its usually OK but the last time I was there was in 99 ... who knows what has happened since then ...
In any case nothing in SFO or NYC or LA ... I can thik of atleast 10 that will rank higher than that IMHO ...
Cool.

I checked Indiana's most dangerous intersections.   All of the ones in Indianapolis had one thing in common- An insane amount of traffic.  Probably the same with most other states.

I live right next to #4 for GA. I mean, I can almost see it from my apartment entrance.

Accident there all the time. And I'm only there 10 minutes out of my day

A while back I saw a Florida bumper sticker that said, "Pray for me -- I drive US 19".

Soon after I drove it from Tallahassee to Tampa Bay.  Seemed like a nice road a north-south divided highway -- what's wrong with that?

Far in the distance on my right is a big pickup pulling a large fishing boat pulls up just sitting there.  It's there for a good 45 seconds as I approach at 55 MPH.  It then lumbers out into my lane just seconds before I get to his position.  I almost impaled myself into his boat, swerving at the last minute into the "just empty" passing lane.

Yea -- lots of similar stories I bet.  Moral -- the next motorist you spot may be a bad driver.  Anticipate the unexpected -- idiots are among us.

funny, Ive always found the the folks that have lived down here in fla for about 3 years or more drive excellent (those being asshats on purpose asside) its the ones that visit here from up north that cant seem to get it straight. most that ive talked to tell me how slick ice and snow can be and how dangerous it is.  I always get dead air and a blank stare when i ask why they cant handle rain?

i grew up in miami, living and going to school few streets off Bird Road (sw40th st) and 97th Ave (think Bird Bowl area) ive seen the worst of it.   now mix in a Mother born in NJ and a Father Born and Raised In Mississippi (they only just paved his street 7 years ago if that helps)  who became a Miami/Dade Cop Chasing punks and bad drivers for 27 years.

I wish i could say the same for the people in RTP (Research Triangle Park, NC).  From my experience about 60% of the population of this area is NOT from NC (nor am I, Chi-Town native myself) and drive like they usually do in their native cities. Some slow as shaZam!, others fast as hell or using the right lane as a launch pad. 5 years ago, i taught myself how to ride my gs in this    :o

As far as florida drivers, they do not know what a YIELD sign means.  Oh wait, it means floor it and whoever happens to be in the right of way better move.

They also don't really get that a stop sign means stop, and that 4-way stops operate under the order of arrival.  Generally, I come to a complete stop, and then the next person just rolls on through, since I was stopped. :dunno:

Left turns in front of oncoming traffic are fine.  Generally 3 or four cars will just turn left in front of oncoming traffic after they get a red light.   :x

Pull out in front of oncoming traffic as in the above posted story.

I've been here several years, and am a good driver.  However, having lived elsewhere prior, I can tell you that florida drivers are RUDE.  Not all of them, but most.  I was also amazed at the amount of speeding one can do.  I've gotten used to that, but it took a few months of people riding my ass on the way to work everyday.  Most of the traffic at the time (sawgrass from university to sheridan) was 85-90 mph.  You can rarely keep a decent distance between the car ahead because if you do, someone takes the space.

When I first moved here I was thinking I'd never get a bike, but I got used to it and now I ride in it.

I guess it's all a matter of perspective, really.
