My Name Is Dave

So I took my bike to the dealer today to have them look at the engine for me. It was running strangely, and I couldn't figure out why. So they fixed it (clogged air filter) and said "everything is fine. Well, almost everything..." To which I say "Well what is it?"

And he says "We were just talking about how a guy of your size needs a good-sized bike. The GS500 is dangerously undersized for a man over 6'1" and 180 lbs. You are posing a grave amount of danger to yourself by riding anything under 600cc, and in fact we recommend a 750, preferably a GSXR."

So now I'm concerned. I've been on the GS5 for a month now, and I think I'm ready to move on to a bigger bike, rather than stay on a smaller one and risk my safety. I am going in tomorrow to look at trading the GS for  GSXR 750. Any tips?  :dunno:

Ah, forget it. I need to go home from work and didn't want to make anyone believe I was that stupid.

El mentiroso means "the liar" in Spanish, and "un mentiro" means "a lie." I am super bored so I posted that. It's all a lie.

I'm going home. On my 500. And not looking to a 750, or anything else, for that matter.

Dave  ;)

that is the biggest line of BS I have heard in a while. Shame on them.

I am 5'10 and weigh 190lbs (All muscle), and the GS is perfectly fine.

Even though you were only kidding...  I actually had a similar thing happen yesterday...

I went to pick up the GS (with a new rear tire) and the mechanic was trying to convince me to buy an SV650...  He asked how long I'd had the GS, and I told him about two months...  He said, "You'll grow out of this thing in no time.  But it's a good beginner bike."

He actually went on and on, but not like a salesman...  It was kinda odd.   :dunno:

The best part was when I told him that I really liked Duc Monsters...  Then he was telling me how really damn expensive they are to maintain.  It was kinda odd...

i've ridden a 04? sv650s and seriously its not that much of a step up.

I've ridden an FI nekkid SV.  The FI SV650s have a significantly more gentle throttle than the carbs, and the position of the nekkid one makes it feel more GS-like.  When I went from my GS to my carbed SVS, it felt like a big step - and it still does when I switch between the bikes.  Total kick in the pants.  I'm curious to ride an FI SVS to see if the FI or the nekkid is more of the difference.

Whats sad is that stories like this one from the original post happen all the time...

ahahahahahah, I don't know why every other dealership except mine is so full of bs, it's amazing how much i hear of dealers ripping off the customers. They have all been so nice to me even before I bought my RM125 from them, when i bought the gs they started inviting me to the demo days, parties and etc and i've even received some free service and merchandise from them. For example when i blew my gear linkage seal they spent an hour working on it and when i asked how much it was gonna cost me they said..."nothing...we can't have ya leakin oil all over the place, people will think it's a Harley." I kinda thought it was a low blow to Harley but i laughed anyways because it's true!

i thought this one was FI.  i cant be sure.  its the newest style if that means nething an 04 i believe.  really it wasnt much of a step at all.  now my GS is jetted, filter and pipe.  the svs was stock.  im sure that might bring the gap closer..

The Suzuki dealership closest to my house has one salesman - he's somewhere between 60 and 70 (he looks like he's been smoking since he came out of the womb, so it's hard to gauge), and he will not suffer new riders coming in trying to buy bikes that are way over their heads.

I was there shopping for a helmet when a 17 year old kid came in with his parents, looking at a gixxer 600 and the kawi 636, and they old coot tried to push him to a GS500F or SV650 (the kid said he had no riding experience).  Kid wouldn't listen, so the salesman looked at the parents and told them he wouldn't sell them a bike that'd likely have their kid scraped off the pavement in a month or two.  I was pretty impressed!

Too bad that dealership's service and parts department suck :/

I get the same thing all the time from bike shops I go to....I'm 5'10" and 220lbs (mostly fat....I like food) and I'm told I need to get an SV650 or something bigger. I love my GS and the insurance is cheap and the maint. is cheap. It gives me all the power I need. If I was to get rid of my 96 Candy Red GS I would get a 04' or 05' model for the sweet look of the fairings. I would not want much more. I'm mostly a commuter and sometimes I ride to clear my head or relax. I don't need a super powerful bike.....my baby GS does everything I need it to do.... :thumb:
