I bought my 1998 GS 2 months ago.  When i first got on it I noticed that I couldn't double downshift.  When I downshift through a single gear I have to put my put under that shifter and slightly lift it.  Then I can downshift again.  This was the extent of my problems until recently.

Now i have problems upshifting as well.  When shifting up through the gears the tranny gets stuck and i have to strain my foot in order to upshift.  It requires a rediculous amount of force to upshift.

A possible reason for the downshift problems that i can think of is a weak or jarred loose return spring.  But i have no idea what to do about the the upshift.  has anyone had similar problems or do you have any suggestions for possible causes and fixes.  Thank you very much.  - Ryan

I'd start with the simple stuff like checking your oil level (not sure if you knew, but the GS uses the engine oil to lube the tranny as well).  You might also find some good info by using the search feature at the top of the page and putting in terms like "transmission AND problems " or "shifting AND problems" etc.

Good luck, welcome to the site!

I think you're on the right track.  Probably, both symptoms are related to the same problem.  The shifting mech has 1 return spring and 2 guide springs and to reach them you'll need to remove the right side engine case then the clutch.  Clymer should have a picture.  :thumb:
