I'm Now The Proud Owner of GS500E #2! (56K Warning)

Yesterday, I brought home my second GS500. I had to laugh, because I've been griping about the number of motorcycles and the amount of motorcycle parts we have all over. Now, it seems, I've started my own collection. I had a vision of fixing this one up and selling it (basically, resurrecting it and getting it back into the beginner-bike population), but it's been pretty well thrashed, so I might harvest the parts that I can use on my bike and then sell it as a track bike.

Hugh Jardon

If you're parting it out, I call "DIBS" on EVERYTHING!

OK, did you get THAT joke?

Ain't irony ironic? Don't you just LOVE that about irony? Could anything else (other than irony) be as ironic as irony?

Actually, I'm glad you bought it; I hate to see motorcycles go to the boneyard, because they almost never escape. If nothing else, it will give you something to wrench on just for fun, and improve your troubleshooting skills with. Just do us a favor and don't actually RIDE it, OK? Looks like the poor thing has been around the block too many times already.

Does it actually run? If not, does it have compression in either cylinder? It looks basically intact, so I think your last idea is the best one; take what you want from it, then haul it to the track and sell it to someone who needs a rolling parts department.

Congratulations on the new addition!

I would be interested in some parts, too, if Hugh doesn't get them all.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Thanks! And no worries. You have dibs on any and all once I decide what I'm going to do with him. Hugh? Hugh who?

My bf actually got him started today, so he's not in quite as bad shape as I thought, though he's still no beauty. My bf plugged the back tire, and we're going to replace the fuel lines this week.

I'll let you know what the verdict is after we've dug a little deeper. He's pretty darned thrashed, but if I can save him, I will (but I'm still gonna harvest his good parts for my bike....stainless-steel brake lines and progressive springs to start with!!) Oh, and his gas tank's in better condition than mine. And I think I'll make him purple.

So far I have an extra Clymer manual to sell, a K & N high-flow air filter (my bike already has one), and 2 stock air boxes that I'll likely sell. It looks as though there's an ignition advancer that he'd never gotten around to installing on his bike, but I'm not positive yet.  :thumb:

pandy  :)

P.S. Saw the pic of you on Southbay Riders forum at the Doc Wong ride. Lookin' good!!  :thumb:

Congrats on the new bike (despite it's lackluster appearance). I look forward to seeing what you do with 'em. However... can I get dibs on the headlight and mounting brackets? :D I'm taking my '04 model's clothes off.

I think you should ship it down here, and pay me to paint it purple for ya.

pandy

Would probly be cheaper just to ship YOU up here to do the slave labour.  :P

The cheapest bike shipping I've found is about 3k...  So... Yeah...  Shipping Davipu would be much cheaper.

And... $200 is still a sweet-ass price, even with a salvage title...  After you grab the parts you want, you could part that thing out for more than $200.

pandy

Yeah, that's what we figure. Plus, I'm just happy as a clam to have another GS500E!  :)  :)  :)

Actually, I own THIS one completely, and my bf and I are both 1/2 owners of the '92. ;)

They're SUCH great beginner bikes that I just hate to see one lost. I've had the time of my life learning on my GS!

But I don't think I need davipu anymore...I think I might just put some purple neon bling-bling on my bike...faster and easier than painting, and looks so KEWWWWWL!

Where have you been looking at shipping?  I know when I was looking for a bike i looked at a shipping agency that ebay recommends, and it was gonna be like 500 from midwest to bay area.  Not cheap, certainly, but not 3k. . . .If you ARE looking for shipping just fyi.   :thumb:  ;)

pandy

Heck, I'd ride the darned thing home for someone for cheaper than shipping would be.  :P

If you are going to take it to parts, I need a gauge cluster/chain guard/passenger toe pegs and brackets.

Please please please, haha.

Haha, the funny thing is, this "salvage title" bike looks more complete than mine.... I think $200 is a great deal for it!

Hahahaha!! I think everyone's put in a claim for something on this poor rat bike...   But...but...but....we must try to let him LIVE if he can!! I understand that it's *possible* to go from "salvage" title to straight title, but I'm still investigating....  :dunno:

GSJames

Oh, definitely try to get the bike going if you can!  And if you are going to part with it, sell it to someone special  :thumb:
