NY requires insurnace to kep your vehicles registered but they make special provisions for motorcycles since they are seasonal, and they are registered from April to April. VA does not have a similar provision?? :dunno:

Why dont you just get insurance? Liabillity for me is only $65 for the whole year.

In MA, registrations and inspections expire in December.  I can only assume that it's okay to ride it to get an inspection without a valid sticker (perhaps I should figure that out....hrm).  I do know that you pay the full annual fee up until October, even though it's only valid through December.

I'm currently trying to decide if it's worth it to drop my liability and collision coverage for the winter, and just leave fire, theft, etc.  I don't expect I'd save that much but I s'pose it's worth a call.  I'm assuming that once it gets put away it's not going to move until spring thaw, so carrying liability and collision seems unnecessary.

My problem is that I don't have a garage.  Right now, I keep the GS in a covered, but not enclosed area.  Before the snow comes, I need to find alternate winter accomodations for it, and then it's not going to be trivial to take it out for a quick spin even if the weather cooperates.

The options that I've come up with are:
* Pay to store it at the m/c shop.  The benefit is that they'll winterize when it goes in, prep in the spring when it comes out and take care of the inspection.  Obvously the downside is $$.
* Beg for garage space.  I've got a couple of options here, but none of them are really close, and would involve me doing all the winter prep wherever it ends up.  If I wait too long (snow falls), I'm S.O.L..
* Try to relocate the bike to the basement for the winter.  I have a walk in basement, but I'm not optimistic that I could pull it off.  Does anyone know offhand if a GSF has any hope of fitting through a standard width door?  I haven't measured yet, but I expect the bars would be a problem.  I'm not counting on this one working out, but it would be nice.
* Actually put in that storage shed I've been thinking about. $$$, but perhaps worthwhile.  Dunno if I have enough time before the bad weather, though.

If anyone else has any other ingenious thoughts, I'd love to hear them.

It should fit in the basement no problem. I own a double house w/ nobody on the other side. I plan on keeping my bike over there for the winter so I can work on it in the kitchen    I cant remember the measurement I got but I know that it was smaller than the front door. Most doors are 36'' I think.

Kind of off topic, but last year I rented a storage shed from one of those "U STORE IT" kinda places. It run me something like $22 a month, and I rented it from November to April. It was OK, I just prepped it and stuck it in there. This year, my girlfriend's dad is letting me store it in their garage so it will save me some $$$  :mrgreen:

In upstate New York, we regularly see sub-zero temperatures all winter long, with windchills sometimes getting to 40 Below 0 or colder. It is not uncommon to get several inches (and in some cases, feet!) of snow per week. Sometimes even daily   . We have a lot of severe cold and severe snowfall warnings, sometimes shutting down schools, businesses, and other services. A lot of people around here build small shelters to protect the kids from the wind/cold at the bus stops.

The urban areas have it a little better; they have more plows, salt trucks, traffic, etc. But in the rural areas, you are sometimes lucky if you can make it to work in a car, letalone on a motorcycle

What's winter? We're still getting high 80s and 90s here.

I lived in Rochester, NY for a couple of years.  :shudder:  I'd regularly lose my car under snow drifts (little white sports car at the time...knucklehead) in my driveway, the parking lot at work, the airport, etc.  It snowed pretty much daily throughout the winter.  My biggest problem was that the year before I lived in Monterey, CA...73 degrees and sunny every freakin day.

Up here in the NE, it's pretty exclusively a 3-season riding environment.

I remember some chilly mornings in NorCal...with fog so thick you couldn't see your own nose.  Of course, you had to get up at 4am to experience this...by 7:30 it all burnt off and it was 73 degrees and sunny.  

I was working down in Tampa last year, and it hit somewhere around 50 degrees one morning...one of my coworkers (native Floridian) came into the office in his snowboarding parka.     I had just flown in from single-digit temperatures and it felt absolutely balmy to me.

I agree that the VA DMV sucks balls.  I plan to ride all winter and have insurance through progessive for my bike.  If you want to ride you might look into that, if not you will have to turn in the plates or pay a hefty fine ($500) for not having it insured.
