I'm putting a dr 650 motor in a gs frame. I'm going to keep a log of what I had to do and and take pics along the way.  I can post them at the end when it's done.  I didn't rally know if anyone would really want it posted here or not so I thought I would ask first....

heck yeah...might post it in the odd's and ends or whatever it is section to keep the purists from giving you crap

i did close to this...DR650 in a FZ600 chassis...crashed it at the track a couple of yrs ago and pulled the engine
i have a early 90's RG-V 250 chassis with the DR sitting there waiting for the AL welder to say it is ok to bring it over
the engine is tie strapped in place and looks really good sitting there.

Yea yes Its very practical ... Take the under powered and over weighted but common and reliable and robust GS motor out and put in an even more under powered and almost as over weighted and even slower revving, and not as robust and not as common DR motor in it ... yea very practical ...        ... BTW its got a super narrow drive sproket location and you'd find it har to run even the 130 rear the GS takes wihtout fabbing up a 2 stage drive but hey they have those for hayabusa's to they can run 300 tires ... so why not.
Cool.

Yeah, definitely. It would be a good addition to the body of knowledge for the GStwin community  :thumb:

srinath, quit your whining
just offset the engine to the left and add a battery and a bunch of stuff to the right side to offset the weight shift off centerline

Servus!!!

I'll be damned!!  Jim Knopf!  Have you been lurking or did you just happen to cathc this post?

Send us some updated picks of your ride!  Also, check out the "GSTWIN" 2005 awards.  Your bike is getting some much needed respect for "best GS".

hey wera,
I think you are the guy that had the KTM motor right?   do you still have that really small turbo we talked about?  I got  a motor, after several years of looking.  on a side note, I also bought a husqvarna 610 enduro. that motor claims 55hp, 6speed, and weight about 75 lbs(motor). thats what I really wanted to put in gs frame.
srinath,
actually, If I use the lower mount it'll line up perfectly. after looking last night, I'm only going to have to fab up a top mount for the motor. I'm going to build brackets to have it mount to all the factory mounts.
If I'm not mistaken, the dr and the gs have the same HP. 35 right??? right now the bike is weighing 300 lbs. thats at least 100 less than a stock GS.

it's just something to build and play with.

IF the MOD. wants to move this to odds and ends feel free to do so.

i'm all for engine swapping, good luck, and keep us posted on how it's going!
The final measure of any rider's skill is the inverse ratio of his preferred Traveling Speed to the number of bad scars on his body. It is that simple: If you ride fast and crash, you are a bad rider. And if you are a bad rider, you should not ride motorcycles.

But i think a 2 stroke would be really awesome.  but either way it will be neat stuff, good luck.

I already put a IT 490(same as a YZ 490)  motor in a gs back in 92ish....  I couldn't stop breaking motor mounts.  it was a full built motor. from the crank to the head.

The DR makes 43hp; at least 3 more hp than the GS. The DR motors are reliable enough after all of the factory updates have been performed on them, pre 2003. Mostly just replacing the base gasket.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

+1 for the two stroke idea. I am thinking about picking up a roller and putting a RD-400 or RZ-350 (Banshee) engine it. It won't be all Suzuki, but Suzuki never made a two stroke motor worth putting in there. I think a GS, with a 350 or bigger two stroke, and an RGV swingarm would be sweet. Combine that with the fact it would be very easy to keep street registered here, that may be the only way I ever have a two stroke street bike.

How about an offset front sprocket?

This sproket is not for a GS500 but one could be made to do the same.  The one pictured allows for the use of a 160/60 17 tire on a bike that was designed for a 120/90 18 rear tire.

^haha yami sprocket...I'm dealing with one of these annoying little bastards now...

albertinhouston

they use them in dragracing too. I use to see them all the time at my friends shop.
