I can't believe the how-dare-you-get-a-litre-bike-you're-gonna-die crowd hasn't shown up yet.  ;)

The GS looks like an infant compared to the 1000.

Congrats on the new bike mate - it is awesome. You have also made me feel a little better as I am looking at getting a new GSX-R750 some time next year and like you I have only ever ridden the GS. Everyone is calling me stupid for wanting to do this and they are probably right. Like you I feel that if I take it slowly and don't ride above my ability/skill level, I should be fine. I also plan to take some advanced riding courses as well, and then take her to the track when I am confident enough in my ability.
For now it is the GS which is a great bike and I will always have a soft spot for it.

After having read many forums, I was also convinced that going from the GS500 to the 1000 was too much. But I also spoke to some very experienced people working in the motorcycle industry (and one racing) and they all said that as long as you have good throttle control, and are able to treat the bike with respect (as to the power), there was no valid reason not to get a liter bike if I could afford one. As simple as that.
I do think that starting on a Gixxer 1K is very stupid tough.
Keep in mind I have only 8 months of riding experience (after going to riding school) but I rode over 11000 km, rode everyday to work regardless of the weather. Most of the time, riding was in the rain so I learned to be very smooth. I don't consider myself a 100% newbie.
Going to riding school and getting a beginner bike is the way to go at first but then you're free to do what you're comfortable with I think.

going from a gs to a gsxr1000 your ears must be loving you... lawnmower to the sexy supersport tone that makes people in cages jump and enter an instant mid-life crisis

I don't think the GS500 is a lawnmower at all :nono:
People who dont know bikes find the GS500 really cool, they actually like the way it sounds as well.
Only bike snobs will sneer at you because you actually made a smart choice and got a GS500.
I love technology and have an engineering background so I like advanced and /or performance stuff hence my choice for the Gixxer.
Now enjoy your GS500 as much as you can because once you've tried a Gixxer or a modern sportbike you will NOT enjoy riding your GS500 anymore.
The day after I bought the Gixxer, I had to bring the GS500 home from the border where I had it parked overnight and it felt so weird! I got used to the Gixxer so quickly I couldn't belive it.
The GS500 felt like the engine was spinning in vain making lots of noise and vibration in the process
Same with the suspension and its vague steering I had come to hate. Being behind the huge and tall handlebars was funny too.
Overall, I will always recommend the GS500 as a first bike, and will always respect whoever choose to start with it. After all, I believe it is beacuse I started on the GS500 that I learned fairtly quickly the basics, I wasn't afraid to go fast to improve my cornering techniques beacuse of the limited power. With the GS500, you have to compensate for what the bike cannot do, shift a lot more, and as a result I think you become a better rider more quickly than on other bikes.

I really hate people like that. For example today i went to a bike dealer in my local town to ask about what sort of bike will be good to be restricted but i wont be dissapointed with when the restrictions up (living in UK on silly UK license). They said there are a few 600's but they don't really suggest getting a 600, they suggest getting a 500. But im not really into naked bikes and the gs500f's ive seen so far were in poor condition, the other 500's all seem to be naked models. So after getting back feeling slightly depressed i had a quick spin on some quiet roads by us on my dads 600 thundercat. And to be honest, sure the power is insanely better and its a fair bit heavier, when its on the move i don't see any problem with upgrading onto a big bike. So long as you remeber to keep control over the bike and not open it right up. When it comes to a stop you have to approach slow until you get used to the weight, but i can flat foot both sides and move the bike as easily as my dad can. Despite my mother telling me it was too heavy for me - she says i couldnt pick it up if it fell over. My response was - how many people find it easy to pick up their bikes when they fall over. Even my dad struggles. So after my little spin ive decided i can cope with a 600. Looking for a restrictor kit now. Ive asked my dad to ride with me for a few weeks together, as much as possible for those just incase moments. Ive been riding big bikes on an empty airfield by us for over a year now, just not on the road much.

I obviously wouldn't suggest diving streight on a big bike with no experience, but ive been through 50cc, 125cc already.

They're nearly $30,000 AUS over her!

How, what, where and why!!!!

I'll sign up for one now too!

The Gixxer is actually quite a bit lighter than the GS (more modern materials and technology used). Check Suzuki's website.

Whereas American auto manufacturers are more fond of names, while the Euros are more inclined to use numbers.
