WTF!!! MICROSOFT WORD HELP!!!

Turd's DUMB ASS saved over a VERY IMPORTANT file.  Is there any way to recover the file from an earlier save point?  I'm totaly EFFED, aren't I?

I've got someone who is 90% sure they want my GS500.  I told them about the awesome maintenance log book that I have.  I did.  Now I don't.  I used it as a template to make my Ducati maintenance log book and SAVED OVER THE DAMN GS ONE without realizing it.

I'm so freakin anal that this is KILLING ME that I have lost ALL SERVICE HISTORY for my FREAKIN BIKE.  I had DETAILED as crap notes about EVERY SINGLE FREAKIN THING I had done to the bike including mileage, date, brands, part numbers and current lunar phase (joke).  The bike only has 3,000 miles on it and I had like 40 entries into this log.

as mentioned before, you could undo a few times nutil you get the original document badk ant then save it with another name. Of course, for this to work you would have to have word still open with the file also open...

if not, then I suggest just to be honet to the buyer and explain what happened. The bike's condition should speak for itself too.

Also since auto save has been mentioned, don't open word again and search for files that are hidden named '~*.doc'  This will pull up all the autosaves and it is possible that you have find one from before the document you overwrote was overwritten.  If you can't get anything that way you are just screwed.  Good luck man.

Welp, its gone.  Thanks for the help fellas.  I tried searching for any hidden files on the computer, and nothing came up.

Now THAT is a huge bummer.

HEY TURD!
Actually, you have one last hope.
Do you have Windows XP on your PC?
If so, use the rollback tool to roll the PC back to a place BEFORE you made the changes to the file.
It will undo the changes you made, then you will have to recreate the file again for your other bike.
Go to PROGRAMS, then ACCESSORIES, then SYSTEM TOOLS, then  SYSTEM RESTORE.
You can choose a place to go back to before you messed up the file, let's say 24 hours ago, then the machine will revert back to the state it was in before you made the changes.
Just remember, it will revert back to all other previous files too, so back up your data first if you need to do that.
And remember, BACK IT UP FIRST next time.
E-mail me if you need help with this.
And don't do any other changes until you do this rollback!

"Restoring your computer does not affect or change your personal data files. For information about backing up personal data files, see Backing up files and folders. "

yep, system restore only backs up the system files, so if you install something that messes things up, you can restore the system to a point where it still worked

Thanks for the help.  Sadly, system restore only rolls back any software, driver or windows settings changes.  I WISH it could get back changed files!

I have a prog called "LexarMedia Image Resucue 2"  which allows me to recover deleted images from just about any camera memory card, it claims 90% success and I have used it several times and got various images back for people.

Surely the principle is the same? We do have several IT people as board regulars, c'mon guys what do you think???

There's a difference between a deleted file and a file that's been saved over.

When you delete a file, it doesn't actually delete the bits. Instead, it simply tells your computer that the location in memory where the file was is now usable for new data. So in essence, all the file is still there until something is written over it.

Whereas, when you overwrite a file, it's written (I believe) in the same location. So no dice.

That works, but only as long as the sectors of the hard drive previously claimed by the deleted file have not been reclaimed by anything else. In today's busy systems that reclaiming usually happens quickly.

(Anybody see ads for "un-delete" programs recently? Me neither.)
