Hi all,

When I bought my bike, it was missing the rubber fuel tank "bumper" (#9 on the parts diagram):



This part took forever to receive as it was on back order (one of their suppliers had stopped manufacturing it).  I finally received the part, installed it, and was wondering what type of adhesive would hold it in place.  Given how long it took to receive it the first time, I'm not anxious to order another any time soon.  Without it, the tank tends to flop around a bit when going over large bumps (like the ferry loading ramps).

a bit of silicone will be fine, it can't come off while the tank is in place. it was more than likly some one forgot to put it back when they took off the tank.
i have nothing on mine and its not going any where

Yes but without it you can get strange vibrations.  I had this RPM-dependent vibrating metal-on-metal sound that I was briefly worried was an engine problem.  Turns out the piece was missing (along with one of the rubber cubes).  Spent some time worrying and searching till I found out that other people had the same kind of sounds from their tank.

You're right, though, that it won't fall off when you're riding.  When I replaced mine, I used some silicone adhesive just to be sure I don't lose it when doing maintenance.

Edit:  Sorry, hmmmnz, thought you were saying that you didn't have the rubber piece on your bike, when you meant you didn't use any adhesive.

Excellent suggestion, thanks!  I was wondering how well the other adhesives would hold up, given that the original adhesive didn't last too long.  I'll get ahold of some of the 3M stuff soon.

I just went to Walgreen's and picked up some Krazy Glue and smacked that sucker on, hasn't moved since.  :thumb:

Cool!  I used to use Krazy Glue and Super Glue as a fix-all.  It seems like there's nothing it couldn't fix--until I bought a used fairing from a guy in Seattle.  It had a small crack in it, so I tried to seal it with Plasti-Glue (a Super Glue designed specifically for plastic).  Absolutely no results whatsoever.  It was if I was putting water on the cracked area--no sealing ability.

I picked up some of that yellow 3M adhesive yesterday.  The guy at the auto parts store called it Gorilla Snot. :laugh:  I have not yet used it, but I'll let you know.

BTW--I had to buy a huge tube of it for a small repair.  Thus, if anyone in the Seattle area needs some, let me know.  I was thinking, this has got to be the case with other stuff as well.  Is there any way to set up a link for stuff that we would be willing to lend out / give away to folks in our areas?  Sort of like Kerry's valve adjustment kit or a public library.

If I'm not supposed to use my fingers (and I guess rubber gloves are out of the question given its purpose), how do I best apply this adhesive? ???

I don't use anything.  It clamps on pretty good solo.  If you must use something, use hairspray or liquid dish soap.
