My GS has started to ruin my pants when I ride it. It's been flinging grease and gunk on my pants. See image below

What's causing this? Is there something I should pull of and clean? I'm not familiar with the construction of the engine so Im not sure what pieces can come over to allow me to clean the sprocket area. Thanks.

most likely from your chain and there's not a whole lot you can do about it.  Grease washes out.

Is it possible that you're leaving too much lube on the chain?  I basically wipe as much off as possible by running a clean rag over the chain about 4-5 times.

I've heard that some chain waxes have more fling-off than others.  You may want to ask around.

The chain lube I use right now it a "dry" spray.  Its good stuff, from belray.

Yeah, that looks like its from some pretty massive fling-off.  You're probably over-lubing your chain.  Are you running a chain guard and sprocket cover?

Yup, that looks like chain fling, you probably have oil on the gear changer as well.

Clean the chain with WD40 and an old rag to get the surface crud off anf then chain-wax it, don't overdo it and keep an eye on it for a while.

A little "housewife" tip, if you have trouble getting the oil out of the jeans, rub the affected area with a damp bar of household soap (or ordinary toilet soap will do) before chucking them into the washer.

too much lubrification (Omg get your mind out of the gutter), suggestion, get yourself riding overpants, this will protect your pants and the armor will portect your body :)

You need to take off the gear shift lever and remove the cover behind it where the front sprocket is located.  I am sure it is loaded with gunk.  Clean out that area and that should help.

+1 to everyone who has posted.  To much lube and prob a build up in the front sprocket area.  clean and relube the chain, then wipe excess off and remove the cover to the front sprocket and wipe out the gunk that is prob in there.

That's what I was thinking  :icon_rolleyes:

Mine does too but for a completely different reason than chain fling....

There is some mystery fluid that I noticed, it's on the fuel hose facing toward the front of the bike the engine, the heel guard, my pants, boots, the left rear quarter panel, etc.  I think I have a leak at my valve cover gasket which is causing oil to leak and the wind is causing it to blow onto the various parts listed above.

Should be a simple fix though.
