Are you sure it's not coming from the dipstick?  Mine seems to leak a little from there every now and then even though the gasket looks fine.

I have a small leak on mine -- appears to be the base gasket.  I'm not motivated to change it just for a small leak, so I just watch the level.  If it isn't leaking substantially, don't sweat it -- enjoy the ride!

I'd say the base gasket is more likely the culprit than the top of the side cover, although the pressure inside does increase a little when the engine's hot, which could in theory contribute to a side leak.   :dunno_white:

Check the little rubber plug on the back of the cam chain tensioner.

And, check your oil level.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

As far as the surging, you may want to check for a loose or broken wire.  I had the one at the negative terminal break on me last summer.  IIRC, I noticed some surging on my ride into work, maybe even the day before, then on the way home it got real bad and died on the highway.  I thought I had run it out of oil or something at the time

On a savage ... the oil galley to the head goes through that gasket. On a GS ... nothing ... so you're just unlucky. Gasket gave up I guess.
Cool.
